❖ Standard compatibility with Windows 95/98/Me, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0
As the printer drivers for the above operating systems are included, it is pos-
sible to print to the maximum capacity with the special features of this ma-
chine.
❖ Network Connectivity
This machine can be used as a network printer.
It can print from any environment as it supports at the same time NetWare
(TCP/IP, IPX/SPX), Windows 95/98/Me, (TCP/IP, NetBEUI), Windows
2000, (TCP/IP, NetBEUI), Windows NT 4.0 (TCP/IP, NetBEUI), UNIX (TCP/
IP), Macintosh (AppleTalk).
If you register the user code together with the client, you can manage the
amount of each printing job.

❖ LAN-Fax Driver
This utility enables you to fax documents directly from your PC. This manual
is provided as a PDF file on the CD-ROM labeled “ Printer Drivers and Utili-
ties ”.
❖ Address Book
This utility enables you to easily store and recall names and numbers for use
with the LAN-Fax utility. This manual is provided as a PDF file on the CD-
ROM labeled “ Printer Drivers and Utilities ”.
❖ Utility 1394
This utility is for the IEEE 1394 board. For more information, see the Readme
file or the manual that comes with the IEEE 1394 board.

Guide to This Machine
• Green: the function is active. • Red: the function has been interrupt-
ed.
Display Panel
The display panel shows the status of the machine, error messages and function

menus.
Important
❒ Do not apply a strong shock or force of about 30 N (about 3 kgf) or more to
the display panel. Otherwise, the display can get damaged.
Note
❒ The function items displayed serve as selector keys. You can select or specify
an item by lightly pressing on it.
❒ When you select or specify an item on the display panel, it becomes highlight-
ed.
❒ Keys lightly shaded (ex. OK ) cannot be used.
Note
❒ The screen displayed when the power has been turned on is [Copy] which is
the factory set default. This setting can be changed when initializing the sys-
tem.
❒ The following illustrations are examples for the machine with the options in-
stalled. See “Options” in the Copy Reference.

[OK] Acknowledges a selected function or entered values, and then re-
turns to the previous screen.
[Cancel] Deletes a selected function or entered values, and then returns to
the previous screen.

[U TNext.] Moves to the previous page or the next page when all the func-
tions cannot be displayed on one page.
[OK] [Yes] Closes message screens.
[Clear] Clears entered values and does not change the screen.
[Exit] Returns to the previous screen.
Online
When the machine is online, it can receive data from the computer.
Offline
When the machine is offline, it cannot receive data from the computer.

Requirements
Requirements
Before using this machine, make sure that all the environmental and electrical
requirements have been met. Connect the machine to the host computer using
the parallel port, Network Interface Board, or both.
Make sure that all the cables, connectors, and electrical outlets necessary to at-
tach the machine to the host computer or network are present.
Important
❒ The interface cable is not supplied in the box. It is your responsibility to pro-
vide the interface cable appropriate for the computer that you are using.

C Squeeze the wire clips on each side of the connector together until they
snap into place. The clips hold the cable securely in place.
D Plug the other end of the parallel cable into the computer's parallel port.

B Connect the other end of the IEEE 1394 Interface cable to the computer or
the other IEEE 1394 node.
Note
❒ The IEEE 1394 interface unit cannot receive data from more than one PC at the
same time. The machine can accept data sent from other PCs, after the first
print job has finished.
❒ The bidirectional transmissions are not supported by the IEEE 1394 interface
unit.
❒ When the IEEE 1394 interface unit is installed successfully, the machine icon
automatically changes from “Use Printer Offline” to “ Ready ”, according to
the IEEE 1394 interface cable plug. See Help for more information on the IEEE
1394 interace unit.
❒ After installing the last option that you want, print a configuration page to
make sure the installation has been correctly performed. If the new device is
listed in the column of configuration options, then it has been properly in-
stalled. For more information about printing a configuration page, see “Print-
er Features Parameters” in the Printer Reference 2.

and practices. If you are not, see the documentation that comes with Windows
for details.

❒ Before starting this installation, close all documents and applications. In a net-
work environment, make sure that users who are logged on are disconnected.
Make sure to do this so as to create the least interference with other users.
❒ After installing a printer driver, you must restart the computer.
Note
2 ❒ If “plug and play” is started, click [Cancel] in the [New Hardware Found], [Device
Driver Wizard] or [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box, and then insert the
CD-ROM. The [New Hardware Found], [Device Driver Wizard] or [Found New Hard-
ware Wizard] dialog box appears depending on the system version of the Win-
dows 95/98/Me or Windows 2000.
❒ The appropriate language name is used on the CD-ROM folder: ENGLISH
(English), DEUTSCH (German), FRANCAIS (French), ITALIANO (Italian),
ESPANOL (Spanish), NEDRLNDS (Dutch), NORSK (Norwegian), DANSK

❖ User Codes
User Codes are eight digit codes that allow you to keep track of printing done
under each code. To use this feature, the network administrator should assign
User Codes and inform users of them before they install the printer driver.

(LCT) or the booklet finisher), you should set up the options with the printer
driver.
Note
❒ When setting up options, you should access the [Printer Properties] dialog box
from Windows. You cannot set up options by accessing the [Printer Properties]
dialog box from an application.
A Click [Start] on the taskbar, point to [Settings], and then click [Printers].
The [Printers] window appears.
B Click the icon of the machine you want to use. On the [File] menu, click
[Properties].

the Printer Properties to specify the alternate printer driver. For details, see
the instructions manual of Windows 2000.

❒ You must set the correct paper size and feed direction that matches tray set-

❒ Make sure to install the PPD file for Windows 95/98/Me. Be careful not to ac-
cidentally install the PPD file for Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0.
D Click [Next].
E Check [Local Printer] and click [Next].
A dialog box for selecting the manufacturer and model name appears.
G Hold down the {SHIFT}} key and insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM
drive. Keep the {SHIFT}
} key held down until the computer has finished ac-
cessing the CD-ROM.
If the Auto Run program starts, click [Cancel].
H Click [Browse].
I Use the [Drives:] list box to select the CD-ROM drive.

K Click [Open].
L Click [OK].
2 M Click to select the name of the machine whose driver you want to install,
and then click [Next].
N In the [Available ports:] box, click to select [Printer Port], and then click [Next].
O Change the name of the machine if you want, and then click [Next].
P Select whether or not you want to print a test page, and then click [Finish].
Q If you are asked if you want to restart Windows, select [Yes]. If you are not
asked, restart Windows after completing the installation.

D After making sure that the [Local Printer] option has been selected, click
[Next].

E Check the check box of the port you want to use, and then click [Next].
A dialog box for selecting the manufacturer and model name appears.
G Hold down the left {SHIFT}} key and insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM
drive. Keep the left {SHIFT}
} key held down until the computer has finished
accessing the CD-ROM.
If the Auto Run program starts, click [Cancel].

H Change the drive name in the list box to the name of the CD-ROM drive,
and then click [Browse].
J Click [Open].

K Click [OK].
A machine model selection dialog box appears.
L Click to select the name of the machine whose driver you want to install,
and then click [Next].
A dialog box for changing the machine name appears.
M Change the name of the machine if you want, and then click [Next].
N Click [Next].
O In the next dialog box you will be asked to print a test page, select [No] and
then click [Next].
A confirmation dialog box appears.
P Make sure that the settings you have set are correct, and then click [Finish].
The installer copies the printer driver files from the CD-ROM to the compu-
ter's hard disk.

❒ If the [Digital Signature Not Found] dialog box appears, click [Yes] to continue
the installation.

Important
❒ The CD-ROM containing the Windows NT Server operating system version
4.0, or the Windows NT Workstation operating system is required for install-
ing the printer driver.
❒ We recommend that you upgrade the Windows NT 4.0 operating system to
Service Pack 4 or later before installing the printer driver. Contact your Win-
dows retailer for more information about the latest version available.
❒ Make sure to install the PPD file for Windows NT 4.0. Be careful not to acci-
dentally install the PPD file for Windows 95/98/Me or Windows 2000.

B Click [Start] on the taskbar, point to [Settings], and then click [Printers].
The [Printers] window appears.
D After making sure that the [My Computer] option has been selected, click
2 [Next].
A dialog box for selecting the machine port appears.
E Check the check box of the port you want to use, and then click [Next]

G Hold down the {SHIFT}} key and insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM
drive. Keep the {SHIFT}
} key held down until the computer has finished ac-
cessing the CD-ROM.
If the Auto Run program starts, click [Cancel].
H Change the drive name in the list box to the name of the CD-ROM drive,
and then click [Browse].
J Click [Open].
K Click [OK].
A machine model selection dialog box appears.
L Click to select the name of the machine whose driver you want to install,
and then click [Next].
A dialog box for changing the machine name appears.
M Change the name of the machine if you want, and then click [Next].
N Click [Next].
O In the next dialog box asking if you want to print a test page, select [No] and
then click [Finish].
The installer copies the printer driver files from the CD-ROM to the compu-
ter's hard disk.

P If you are asked if you want to restart Windows, select [Yes]. If you are not
asked, restart Windows after completing the installation.
Setting up options
Limitation
❒ Changing the setting of the machine requires Full Control access permission.
Members of the Administrators, Server Operators, Print Operators, and Pow- 2
er Users groups have Full Control permission by default. When you setup op-
tions, log on using an account that has Full Control permission.
Important
❒ If the machine is equipped with certain options (e.g. the Large Capacity Tray
(LCT) or the booklet finisher), you should set up the options with the printer
driver.
Note
❒ When setting up options, you should access the [Printer Properties] dialog box
from Windows. You cannot set up options by accessing the [Printer Properties]
dialog box from an application.
A Click [Start] on the taskbar, point to [Settings], and then click [Printers].
The [Printers] window appears.
B Click the icon of the machine you want to use. On the [File] menu, click
[Properties].
E Use the [Change Setting:] list to select the appropriate setting for the selected
option.

L Click and drag the plugin file into [Printer Descriptions] in [Extensions] in [Sys-
tem Folder].

E Click the printer description file you want to use, and then click [Select].
The PPD file is set up, and the [Adobe PS] icon appears at the left of the ma-
chine name in the list. Next, follow the procedure on P.35 “Setting Up Options”
to make the option settings, or close the [Chooser] dialog box. 2

A On the [Apple] menu, select [Chooser].
B Click the [Adobe PS] icon.
C In the [Select the PostScript Printer:] list, click the name of the machine you
want to use, and then click [Setup].
D Click [Configure].
A list of options appears.
E Select the option you want to set up and select the appropriate setting for it.
Note
❒ If the option you want to set up is not displayed, the PPD file might not be
set up correctly. Check the name of the PPD file shown in the dialog box.
F Click [OK].
The list of options closes.
G Click [OK].
The [Chooser] dialog box appears.
