Essay Questions
1. What are Maxwell’s assumptions in deriving the Maxwell’s law of distribution of
velocities and obtain Maxwell’s distribution of molecular speed in a gas?
Describe an experiment to verify the law.
2. Define entropy. What are reversible and irreversible processes? Explain with
examples. Write a note on entropy change in reversible and irreversible
processes.
3. Describe Carnot’s engine and derive an expression for its efficiency. Does the
efficiency depend upon working substance?
4. What are thermodynamic potentials? What is their importance? Starting from
thermodynamic potentials, derive the Maxwell’s thermodynamic equations.
Show that Cp-Cv=R for an ideal gas.
5. State and explain Joule Kelvin effect. Derive expressions for Joule-Kelvin effect
for an ideal gas.
6. What is adiabatic demagnetization? Explain how this principle is used in
producing low temperatures with necessary theory.
7. Explain the principle of regenerative cooling. Explain the method of producing
liquid Helium by Kapitza’s method.
8. What is blackbody? Explain the energy distribution in the spectrum of a
blackbody radiation. State Planck’s hypothesis and derive Planck’s law for
energy distribution in the Blackbody radiation. Show that Wien’s and Rayleigh-
Jean’s laws are special cases in Planck’s law.
9. Define solar constant. Explain how the solar constant is determined
experimentally by using Angstrom’s pyroheliometer.

disappearing filament optical pyrometer
12. How the surface temperature of the sun determined using solar constant?
13. Write down the difference between Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein and
Fermi-Dirac distributions.
14. What are fermions and bosons? Mention the differences between them.
