The main reasons for the invasion of Afghanistan by USSR are as follows:

states) and at the cost of Moscow USA was heading towards Middle East, after
successfully courting different countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt and
others. USSR feared that they are losing their war of Capitalism vs. Communism and
they will lose their communist proxy especially in Afghanistan. The new government
which was communist in nature and had a very little support from the people, revolt arose
against this government by the groups collectively known as mujahedeen. So the internal
uprisings and fighting within the country made USSR to invade. In order to alert the

STRATEGIC POSITION
Strategic position of Afghanistan is such that it is very important for the security of the
borders of USSR. Moreover taking over Afghanistan significantly strengthens the Soviet
Union. This gave them an arc of influence that stretches from Southeast Asia to Arabian
Peninsula. Soviet used strategic location of Afghanistan to retaliate to the U.S union with
Pakistan and the surrounding Gulf states. Moreover they aimed to establish important
place in Asia along with benefits that include trade and access to Gulf oil.

For all of the above reasons USSR invaded Afghanistan and USSR after Second World War
formed a friendly relation with Afghanistan and also provided aid for its development. This
