Interests of USSR in Afghan War

The main reasons for the invasion of Afghanistan by USSR are as follows:

 LOSS OF COMMUNIST PROXY

This is the most important reason that why USSR invaded Afghanistan. Now considering

the capitalist USA on one side and communist USSR on the other side (both are rival

states) and at the cost of Moscow USA was heading towards Middle East, after

successfully courting different countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt and

others. USSR feared that they are losing their war of Capitalism vs. Communism and

they will lose their communist proxy especially in Afghanistan. The new government

which was communist in nature and had a very little support from the people, revolt arose

against this government by the groups collectively known as mujahedeen. So the internal

uprisings and fighting within the country made USSR to invade. In order to alert the

communist government in Afghanistan, which was afterwards headed by banner leader

Babrak Karmal of People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, against the increasing

upheaval.

 STRATEGIC POSITION

Strategic position of Afghanistan is such that it is very important for the security of the

borders of USSR. Moreover taking over Afghanistan significantly strengthens the Soviet

Union. This gave them an arc of influence that stretches from Southeast Asia to Arabian

Peninsula. Soviet used strategic location of Afghanistan to retaliate to the U.S union with
Pakistan and the surrounding Gulf states. Moreover they aimed to establish important

place in Asia along with benefits that include trade and access to Gulf oil.

 International Actors

USSR invaded in order to restrain America and China to establish influence in

Afghanistan before USSR, as this would result in direct hostility of those two rival

powers.

 Dominance of Revolutionary Ideals

USSR invaded in order to enforce the dominance of Marxist-Leninist revolutionary

ideals, above the emergent Nationalist Islamic ideology in Afghanistan.

 Imperial Intervention

Soviets intervened in order to restrain imperials to occupy Afghanistan, as imperials were

interested in getting access to the unprocessed and cheap manufactured goods that are

found in Afghanistan.

For all of the above reasons USSR invaded Afghanistan and USSR after Second World War

formed a friendly relation with Afghanistan and also provided aid for its development. This

10 year war in Afghanistan caused a major loss to the economy of Afghanistan and led many

Afghans to flee to neighboring countries.
