1. (10 pts) Ball bearings of radius R = 0.01 m are annealed in
an industrial process by making sure their center tempera- property value tures reach 270 o C. Fluid at T∞ = 275 o C flows around a ρ 7800 kg/m3 bearing in the annealer such that the convection coefficient k 55 W/(m K) is h = 825 W/(m2 K). Material properties are given in the table. If the initial bearing temperature is a uniform 25 o C, c 550 J/(kg K) show that the capacitance model is valid and calculate the α 1.28 × 10−5 m2 /s minimum annealing time, t. 2. (10 pts) A passive storage heater is made out of a cubical of bricks of edge length w = 0.5 m. It is put in the sun to absorb heat and wheeled inside to release that heat on cold nights (Fig. 1). Material conductivity, heat capacity, and density are k = 0.7 W/(m K), c = 900 J/(kg K), and ρ = 2000 kg/m3 , respectively. The sun heats the brick cube to a uniform 50 C and the cube, in turn, heats a room having a relatively still air convection coefficient of h = 0.42 W/(m2 K) to maintain it at 20 C. Assuming a length scale of w/6 (accoring to the “volume over surface area” rule) and that the cube liberates heat equally from all 6 of its sides, calculate the morning temperature of the heater, TF , to the nearest tenth of a degree after 12 hours of operation. Figure 1: Heater. 3. (10 pts) In Question 2, calculate the total heat energy, Q (in units of Joules), liberated over the whole period of operation. 4. (10 pts) A well–insulated box will be filled with a sub- stance that must be kept cold. Because this substance will also be under pressure, the “structural” part of the box is made of aluminum alloy, k = 55 W/(m K) insulation
and α = 0.0001 m2 /s, of thickness L = 0.03 m (Fig. 2). T 0 = 25 T oo = −5
The box has an initial temperature of T0 = 25 o C, h = 1600 but is to be “pre–cooled” before filling by circulating a coolant at T∞ = −5 o C with a convection coefficient of x h = 1600 W/(m2 K). Cooling is considered to be suf- 0.03 ficient when the entire domain 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.03 is at 0 o C or below. Assuming the 1–term approximate model of unsteady conduction is valid, find the minimum cool- Figure 2: Wall cross–section. ing time to the nearest whole second. 5. (10 pts) Calculate the total fraction of the heat energy, relative to the coolant being used, that has been removed from the structural walls of the cooling box in Question 4 for the cooling time that was calculated.
