Assignment - 2
Instruction: Attempt all the problems. The hand written (not typed) and sketched (mainly by free hand, except few
dimensions) solutions of problems of assignment-2 should be submitted by 6 pm of 2nd Nov. 2020 as per the
instruction given to you by a TA. Late submission is not permitted. Matching of hand writings and sketches
of two or more students in any problem’s solution will invite “zero” marks to all the concerned students
(having matching of hand writings and contents) irrespective to who has actually done and who has copied.
Q.1 (a) An overhung diving board is shown in Fig. 1. Find the reaction forces and construct the shear
and moment diagrams for this board with a 100 kg person standing at the free end. Determine
the maximum shear force, maximum moment, and their locations. Any missing data may be
assumed suitably with justification. (Marks: 5)
(b) Determine the impact force and dynamic deflection that will result when the 100-kg person
jumps up 25 cm and lands back on the board. Assume that the board weighs 30 kg and deflects
13 cm statically when the person stands on it. Find the reaction forces and construct the shear
and moment diagrams for this dynamic loading. Determine the maximum shear force,
maximum moment, and their locations along the length of the board. (Marks: 7.5)
Q.2 (a) Suppose a cantilevered diving board as shown in Fig, 2 is used in place of overhung diving
board in Q.1 (a). Now, determine the maximum shear force, maximum moment, and their
locations. Any missing data may be assumed suitably with justification. (Marks: 5)
(b) Determine the impact force and dynamic deflection that will result when the 100-kg person
jumps up 25 cm and lands back on the cantilevered diving board (refer Fig. 2). Assume that the
board weighs 20 kg and deflects 8.5 cm statically when the person stands on it. Find the reaction
forces and construct the shear and moment diagrams for this dynamic loading. Determine the
maximum shear force, maximum moment, and their locations along the length of the board.
