relate to a project

u  Design drawings – main specifications used for bidding and construction
u  Shop drawings –details for fabrication, responsibility of GC but approved
by owner
u  As-Built drawings – how it was eventually completed – used for
maintenance, asset management

u  Site plan – lot and buildings on adjacent lots, underground utilities,
sidewalks, spot elevations
u  geotechnical information
u  foundation – footings, piles, walls, rebar, floor joists

u  window and door schedules (dimensions, locations,
manufacturers or performance expectations)

Common abbreviations

u  a.f.f. = above finished floor


u  o.c. = on center
u  i.d. = inside dimension (or diameter)
u  o.d. = outside dimension
u  o.a. = overall dimension
u  n.t.s. = not to scale

Shop drawings

u  Once awarded, general contractor is responsible for getting shop


drawings from subs
u  Provides details for off-site manufacturing
u  Must be approved by the architect or engineer

Specifications

u  Are the written part of the project documents – describe in words the
materials and methods required for the project
u  Indicate quality requirements (drawings generally indicate quantities)
u  Quality of specs varies widely and are a function of the skill of the writer
and type of project

u  Should be technically complete, clear, understandable and legally


enforceable
u  Augment and explain drawings
u  Provide project specific details
u  Provide instruction for the engineer, inspectors, contractors during the
