The San Francisco-based startup's

How does it work? SAR sends pulses

be detected upon the waves return.
The echoes are then stitched

MARCH STARSHIP
#1Last week, SpaceX was able to successfully land its Starship SN10 prototype
on just its third high altitude test flight. The vehicle exploded on the pad a few
minutes later.
The details: The SN10 prototype of Starship, SpaceX's next-generation
reusable launch vehicle, flew to an altitude of 10km, transitioned to a
horizontal orientation (i.e. "the belly flop") to slow its decent, and landed
vertically back onto its launchpad. Unfortunately, the SN10's landing legs
failed to lock into place, likely starting a methane leak that led to the explosion.
Why it matters: Starship is on the cusp of ushering in the next paradigm
shift in launch services and the propulsive landing was a significant step
forward. Remember that the construction of the first prototype
('Starhopper') occurred just two years ago. The breakneck speed of
progress has significant implications:Starlink will scale: With an operational
Starship, the rapid expansion of Starlink is the most realistic near-term use
case. A Falcon 9 can carry 60 satellites while Starship can carry up to 400.
SpaceX needed about twenty Falcon 9 launches for the current number of
Starlink satellites in orbit. Starship would theoretically take just three.
SpaceX would have a key advantage over competitors considering the
time required to fully deploy a mega-constellation of 12,000+ satellites.
Launch costs: The cost to reach low Earth orbit will soon drop by another
order of magnitude. The Falcon 9 price tag is currently $60 million. Musk
estimates the price of a fully reusable Starship will drop to $2 million.
Mars 2024: At the current pace, SpaceX's plan of an unmanned mission in
2024 looks entirely plausible. The real excitement around Starship
infrastructure will ultimately be for deep space exploration and hypersonic
point-to-point transportation.
There are key engineering differences between Starship and the Falcon
family that drive the significant performance variance highlighted above.
These include the souped-up booster ('Super Heavy'), the methane-based
Raptor engine (an incredibly efficient full-flow staged combustion cycle
engine), and much more that we unfortunately don't have time to dive into.
For that, we would like to direct you to our friends at The Everyday
Astronaut who have created a great guide.
What's next? SpaceX has already rolled out the SN11 prototype onto its
launch pad for a potential flight this week. Many other prototypes, as well
as the first Super Heavy booster, are in various stages of construction,
and are scheduled to perform their own test flights this year.

#1 NASA significantly raises prices for commercial ISS
users
In a statement published on NASA's website, the agency
announced that it would be revisiting its commercial
pricing policy for the International Space Station (ISS).
The key change was the removal of a subsidy the agency
was providing commercial users. As an example, the cost
to transport 1kg of cargo up to the station increased
nearly 600% without the subsidy.
The agency's highlighted that its decision was related to

Biden issues national security guidance referencing space
This week the Biden administration released their "Interim National Security
Strategic Guidance". The document lays out the administration's strategy for
national security. Only two sentences directly comment on space policy but the
document help gleans some insight on how the administration will approach space
policy. We highlight:
China and Russia are specifically listed as "threats" to American interests.
While many in the defense community are focused on the cyber and military
threats, we believe this threat also extends to outer space. China, alone, is
focusing on launching 40+ rockets this year. This looming threat will encourage
American investment in the American space community (emphasis on
American, e.g. Momentus Space).
The administration's goal is to mend fences with diplomacy rather than force,
this includes space. The administration writes, "We will lead in promoting
shared norms and forge new agreements on emerging technologies, space,
cyber space, health and biological threats, climate and the environment, and
human rights."

NASA to use commercial launch vehicle for
Jupiter moon mission
NASA has announced a key decision to only

decision ends a prolonged dilemma for NASA,
which until recently was legally required to
launch the mission on the more expensive Space

The 2021 appropriations bill enacted in
December allowed NASA to use an alternative
system. The leading commercial contender for
the mission is the SpaceX Falcon Heavy, which if
selected would save the agency as much as $1.5

ICYMI: 2021 is setting up to be another big year for the space industry. What
will we look out for?
The continued maturation of launch services
Space agencies forging ahead with robotic and human exploration
New business models being put to the test
Crewed Launch: Boeing's second Starliner test will take place on March 29th. If
successful, NASA will have another spacecraft outside of SpaceX's Crew
Dragon to ferry astronauts to and from the ISS. Axiom, a company planning to
build a private space station, is also working to launch its first crewed mission
to the ISS, but using a Crew Dragon.
Tourism: Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) and Blue Origin's New Shepard may send
tourists into space on suborbital flights. Virgin Galactic is scheduled for three
more powered test flights in the first half of this year before a civilian can fly.
New Shepard has launched 13 times now and the booster has proven its
reusability through vertical landings after flight.
Lunar Exploration: NASA plans to launch its first uncrewed Artemis mission to
orbit the Moon by the end of the year. The agency will use its Space Launch
System rocket and Orion crew capsule. The mission will test out the Orion
vehicle hardware, software, and life support systems.
Astrobotic Technology’s Peregrine lander will take 28 of NASA's Commercial
Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) payloads to the moon in June via ULA's Vulcan
rocket. If successful, it will be the first private spacecraft to successfully land
on the moon.
Mars Exploration: Three missions will reach Mars in February
:NASA’s Perseverance rover will perform the most extensive search for life
on Mars to date
UAE's Hope mission (the first Arabian mission to Mars) will enter orbit and
study the climate
China’s Tianwen-1 will also search for life and assess the planet's
environment
Deep space: NASA plans to launch the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART)
probe in July to help learn more about how to prevent an impact of Earth by a
hazardous asteroid
