1. State the leading term and determine the end behavior of the function. It may be necessary to multiply to
determine the leading term. Write a complete description of the end behavior.
a. f ( x) = 10 x 2 − x 4 + 1 b. h( x) = x( x − 2) 2 (2 x + 3)( x − 1)
2. Based on the end behaviors, the roots, and whether the function’s sign changes at the roots or doesn’t change,
define two different possible functions that could be represented by the given graph.
a. K b.

4. For the graph in 3b, state the interval(s) where the graph is concave up. State the interval(s) where the graph is
concave down.
5. For the graph in 3d, state the interval(s) where the graph is increasing. State the interval(s) where the graph is
decreasing.
6. Factor the function as much as possible using integers. SHOW WORK.
a) 𝑏(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 b) 𝑘(𝑥) = 𝑥 4 − 8𝑥 c) ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑥 4 + 2𝑥 2 − 3
8. Using one of the given zeros and synthetic division, factor each function completely. SHOW WORK.
a) 𝑞(𝑥) = 𝑥 5 + 7𝑥 2 − 𝑥 4 + 10𝑥 − 7𝑥 3 − 10 b) 𝑞(𝑥) = 𝑥 5 − 3𝑥 4 − 81𝑥 + 243
𝑥 = 1 is a zero of the function 𝑥 = 3 is a zero of the function
b. For each zero, state the multiplicity of each zero. Then state whether the graph of the function will cross
through the x axis at that root (and the sign of the function changes) or turn around (and the sign of the
function does not change). If a zero does not have a corresponding x intercept, explain why.
d. Determine the leading term and describe the end behavior of the function.
e. Draw a sketch of the function that includes all of the information that you found above.
f. State each interval determined by the real zeros of the function and the sign of f on each of those intervals.
c. State the interval(s) on which f is decreasing at an increasing rate or say there are none.
12. Imagine a bottle with the following shape filling with water.
a. Sketch a possible graph of the height of the water as function of volume of water.
b. Describe what the concave up portion of the graph conveys about how the amount of volume of water
and height of the water in the bottle change together.
13. Find the zeros of the polynomial function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 9𝑥 2 + 27𝑥 − 35 given that x = 5 is a zero.
14. Find the remaining zeros of the polynomial function 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 4 + 5𝑥 3 + 70𝑥 2 + 320𝑥 + 384 given that
x = 8i is a zero.
