LESSON 1
Thinking Time!
2. What is the purpose of using active carbon filters in some newer models of air conditioners?
a. to eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses in the air
b. to absorb or removing particles and odors in the air
c. to clean the air and protecting the environment
d. to remove dust and lint in the air
Answer: B
Activity 1
Direction: Study the picture shown previously. Describe each of them by identifying their differences and
commonalities. You may use the venn diagram below for your answers.
Manual Automatic
Direction: Research and list the brands and models of air conditioners with the following kinds of filter:
standard filter, three-stage system filter, and multifunctional filter. Write your answer on the table
below.
Type of Filter
Brand Model
Standard Three Stage System Multi-functional
LG

3. What types of filter are used to condition and sanitize the air inside a room? Explain its purpose or
function.
Carbon Filter – It filterize the air coming in the air condition and removes the odors.
LESSON 2
Thinking Time!
1. Make a list common tools and materials in removing and cleaning air filters of window-type air
conditioners with their uses.
Screwdrivers, Wrenches, and Pliers (Dismantling the case of the ACU).
Vacuum cleaners (To suck dirt inside the ACU).
Pressurized water sprayers (To wash excess dirt that hard to clean)
Soft paintbrush (Brushing out the dirt of the ACU)
Detach the front grill of the air conditioner and remove the filter by carefully pulling it.
Use a water hose with a moderate pressurized flowing water to wash out the accumulated dust
and lint from the filter. Wash the filter with the cleaner right side up.
For a badly soiled or very dirty filter, use a mild detergent mixed with wash water.
Let the filter dry thoroughly before reinstalling.
Activity
Acceptability
Performance Criteria
Yes (5 pts.) No (0 pts.)
1. Air filter is identified, removed, and
checked following the standard
procedure
2. Appropriate tools and equipment are
prepared and readily available for the job
3. Appropriate / recommended tools,
materials and equipment are used in
cleaning the air filter
4. Safety measures are observed in
performing the job

2. What happens to the air-conditioning unit when filters are clogged or restricted?
The air conditioner will not produce cold air temperature.
3. What type of filters are used to condition ad sanitized the air inside a room? Identify and
describe each purpose or function.
Carbon Filter - It filterize the air coming in the air condition and removes the odors.
LESSON 3
Thinking Time!
What happens to the air conditioning system if the evaporator is very dirty or badly soiled?
It will not produce cold air or the cold air will not pass thru. And when the airflow is
obstructed, causing poor air circulatioon and insufficient cooling.
Sum Up
2. Why is it important to periodically check and clean the evaporator and condenser of an ACU?
Because without them the ACU won’t produce cool air.
LESSON 4
Thinking Time
How do you spray pressurized water to the condenser and evaporator during cleaning? Why?
It is for me recommendable to used pressurized water to clean the condenser and
evaporator because by means of pressure it easy wash dirt that is intact on the parts
that it’s hard to reach by hand cleaning.
Activity 1
Direction: Write the basic characteristics of the four types of powder or liquid cleaners and identify
whether they are an advantage or disadvantage. Use the table below for your answers.
Advantage Disadvantage
1. Acid-based coil cleaners Very effective cleaning Destructive when used
substance used in cleaning the improperly because it may
condenser and evaporator. dissolve anything it touches.
2. Alkaline-based coil cleaners Effective cleaning substance but Extra care is still necessary
fairly safe, and offer excellent because they are caustic like the
cleaning results in almost all acid-based cleaners.
conditions on both condenser
and evaporator coils.
3. Solvent-based coil cleaners Effective in removing grease Solvents are flammable and
and smoke residue. most give off strong smell and
vapors.
4. detergent coil cleaners Speed-up the cleaning process. Not be very effective in
It is relatively safe, since most of removing particulates and
it is biodegradable and corrosions. Detergent
environment friendly. compounds also require
thorough rinsing as a final step.
Sum Up
Directions: With the guidance of a teacher, dismount a window-type ACU and prepare it for cleaning.
Use the appropriate tools and equipment and observe safety practices.
SUMMATIVE TEST
1. A very dirty air filter thorough cleaning using what kind of cleaner?
a. an alkali-based washing liquid
b. mild detergent like soap
c. a dish washing liquid
d. water only
ANSWER: B
2. What part of the window air conditioner enables the circulation of filtered and cooled air in the
room?
a. radial fan
b. compressor
c. axial fan
d. evaporator
ANSWER: C
4. What is the purpose of using active carbon filters in some newer models of air conditioners?
a. to absorb or remove particles and odors in the air
b. to eliminate harmful bacteria and viruses in the air
c. to clean the air and protect the environment
d. to remove dust and lint in the air
ANSWER: A
8. What cleansing agent is commonly used in cleaning the condenser and evaporator of a window type
ACU?
a. mild detergent
b. hydrochloric acid
c. alkali-based detergent
d. warm water
ANSWER: A
9. What equipment can be used to clean very dirty condensers and evaporators?
a. air compressor
b. pressurized water sprayer
c. vacuum cleaner
d. pail and dipper Page 17
ANSWER: B
10. What among the following is an effective, fairly safe, and environmental-friendly cleaner?
a. oil-based detergent
b. solvent
c. acid
d. alkaline
ANSWER: B
B. List down at least 4 basic tools/equipment used in cleaning air filters. Explain the use or function of
each tool.
1. Explain the effect of “foaming” when a chemical coil cleaner is applied in cleaning ACU condenser and
evaporator.
Basically when using foam or foaming cleaning is usually cleaning by detergent soap. It need to
form a foam so that the dirt easily absorb by the foam.
2. Why is it important to rinse properly the evaporator and condenser with water especially if acid based
or alkaline-based cleaners are used?
Because acid and alkaline base is a chemical that maybe harmful in some parts of evaporator
and condenser. It is recommended to wash it thoroughly and immediately.
3. How do you spray pressurized water to the condenser and evaporator during cleaning? Why?
Use pressurized water to clean the condenser and evaporator because by means of pressure it
easy wash dirt that is intact on the parts that it’s hard to reach by hand cleaning.
