Experiment Name: Calculation of moisture regain & correct invoice
weight.

Introduction:
Moisture Regain: Moisture regain is defined as the percentage of water present in a
textile material of oven dry weight.
The percentage of moisture in a textile material brought into equilibrium with a
standard atmosphere after partial drying, calculated as a percentage of the moisture-
free weight.
Let,
Oven dry weight = D
Weight of water = W (= Original weight- oven dry weight)
Moisture Regain = MR or R
Then, MR (%) = 100 W/ D

Moisture Content: Moisture content is defined as the weight of water in the material
expressed as a percentage of the total weight.
Let,
Oven dry weight = D
Weight of water = W (= Original weight- oven dry weight)
Moisture Content = MC or C
Then, MC (%) = 100 W/ (W + D)

Oven Dry Weight: The constant weight obtained by drying textiles at a specific
temperature of 105 ± 3oC

Standard Moisture Regain: The moisture absorbed by a particular weight sample

in the standard atmosphere after treating at 105±3oC is called Standard Moisture
Regain. It is also called official regain.

Objective:
 To know how to calculate moisture regain
 To know how to calculate moisture content
 To know standard moisture regain of cotton

Required Apparatus:
 Oven Drier
 Cotton Fiber
 Weight Machine

Description:
 First of all, I take sample weight is donated by S. here I took 9 grams of cotton
fibre.
 Now I dry the 9* gram of fibre in oven. In this step, when we see the green light
of the oven is on, it means the switch is on. Then the temperature will be raising
until the temperature 105 degree Celsius. After the 105 degree Celsius
temperature the red light will be on. It means after signaling the thermostat the
heating element will be off. After the situation, the temperature will not raise.
 In this condition, we put the fibre in rest. The temperature is always 105+_ 3
degree Celsius.
 After 1.5 hours, when the fire is drying it means all moisture is evaporated.
Then we measure the weight of the fibre is 8.3 grams. We put the fibre here 24
hrs or 48hrs
 After 24 hours or 48 hours we measure the fibre weight. Then we can see the
magic of the fibre. It means the weight we put yesterday, the weight is
increasing and the fibre gain the moisture.
 The next day, when we measure the weight, the weight is 9.02 grams.

Result:
 Moisture Regain – 8.674%
 Moisture Content – 7.98%
 CIW – 798.08
Precaution:
 The wt. of the sample should be taken very carefully so that the wt. of the
sample is 5 gm.
 The wt. of the container should be measured very carefully.

Conclusion: After finished this experiment I learn about, how to calculate MR, MC
and CIW. So, this experience will help us in our future professional life.
