MANDAL, SIRICELLA CONSTITUENCY, KARIMNAGAR DISTRICT.
TITLE: Design of Pier and foundation

1.0 INTRODUCTION:

The design of pier and foundations for the bridge on R/F Narayanapur to Kondapur in Yellareddypet mandal,
Siricella constituency, Karimnagar district is presented in this design document. As per Hydraulic calculations, the
maximum design dischage and linear waterway is calculated and its corresponding span is taken for the economical design
of sub structure and superstructure.

The maximum design discharge = 5828.833 m3/sec


Linear water way calculated = 190.240 m
Linear waterway provided = 192.000 m
Velocity of water flow = 4.97 m/sec
Span (C/c of Ex. Joint) = 17.11 m
No. of span = 12 No's

As per Geotechnical investigation report, the SDR is available at different depths below sill level and foundation level
is considered 1.5m below into the SDR.
As per geotechnical report, the open foundations are provided for both pier and abutment.
The size of open foundation and depth of foundation is decided based on the actual loads coming on superstructure and the
design calculations are presented in the next pages.

The following loads are considered for the design of superstructure and substructure.

1.4 Analysis and design Methodology:

The above mentioned loads are considered for design of substructure and foundation. The above loads are
transmitted to the foundation and the foudation is checked for stability, over turning and the maximum and minimum
base pressures. At foundation level, the max. base pressures are found to be safe within the permissible limit and no
tension is allowed at the base of footing. The footing is designedfor flexure, and it is checked for single shear and punching
shear also and it is found to be within the permissible limits.

The above mentioned forces are trasferred to the base of pier. And the pier cross section is checked for axial
load and bending moment. The pier stresses are calculated with inhouse bending thrust program and the same are checked
with an excel file for your reference of the program.

Design of Pier Cap

The Pier is circular in shape of diameter 1.5m. The width of Pier Cap is 1.7m, uniform in the
longitudinal direction. The pier cap is subjected to bending moments predominantly in the transverse
direction, as the outer bearings are placed away from the pier support. In the longitudinal direction,
the pier cap is entirely supported by the pier, hence no separate design for bending / shear in long.

As the Pier is a circular in shape, the section at the face of its equivalent square is considered as the support section.
