Introduction
We have learned about the origin and nature of badminton and how it is beneficial towards
health in promoting fitness. One of the popular sports that can be played for people of all ages.
However, the development of badminton as a game is formed into a sport with the use of certain
facilities and equipment. For this lesson, we will explore and identify different equipment facilities
including its function and importance.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this unit the students should have:
1. Identify the different equipment and facilities; and
2.Explain the function and importance of using proper equipment.
Topics
Court
Badminton courts are rectangular
surfaces divided in half by a center
net and are usually marked for both
singles or doubles games with
boundary widths varying between
the two match types. Courts are
surfaced with safe flooring materials
for gameplay, that include wood,
synthetic, and rubber
flooring options. The recommended
surface for a badminton court is wood
and bituminous material. Avoid concrete or carpet as playing on it will easily injure you.
The Badminton Court shall be a rectangle laid out with lines of 40mm wide, preferably in white or
yellow color. The Badminton Court Dimensions are of 13.4m in length and 6.1m in width.
3 Types:
This surface is the most common surface. Used in majority of the top class
Badminton venues and for professional matches, this surface comes with a
wooden base on top of which synthetic mats are laid. These courts provide a
good bounce and are anti-slippery. They also protect your knees from injuries
and reduces the strain. The synthetic mats are either made up of PVC or PU.
2) Wooden surface
Apart from the synthetic surfaces, you will see most venues supporting
the wooden courts. This surface provides a good set up to play with
good shot-making and bounce but sometimes it is bound to
be slippery. When the wooden surface is spread with the players’
sweat or water, the surface might not be desirable to play.
3) Acrylic surface
They are most similar to the synthetic surfaces that come with PVC/PU.
The level of shock absorption they provide is not as good as the synthetic
courts or the wooden courts. They come in various colours.
Shuttlecock
The badminton shuttlecock, also referred to as a shuttle or
birdie, acts similarly to a ball in other racket sports. However,
the design of the birdie creates more drag as it is propelled
through the air due to its
feathered shape. The
shuttlecock is made up of
a cone shape with a hard
cork at its tip.
Shuttlecocks can be
made from a variety of
materials -- more
expensive models are actually made from feathers, and less
expensive models are made from plastic feathers. The shuttle
has 16 feathers attached to the base and the length of the
feathers range between 2.44 and 2.75 inches.
The Net is the central gameplay element in a game of Badminton, requiring players to return the
shuttlecock from one side of the court to the other during the match. Made taut by the use of weighted
tension poles on the outside edges of the badminton court, the badminton net is allowed to sag
slightly in the center of the span. Unlike other sport nets that require the poles to be installed
permanently, badminton nets are often mobile and can be moved and setup quickly when ready for
play. Variations of badminton nets come in polyethylene, nylon, and vinyl.
A mesh net divides the badminton court into two sides. A badminton net is placed lower than a
volleyball net at five feet and one inch high on the sides and five feet high in the center. The net shall
be made of fine cord of dark color and even thickness with a mesh of not less than 15mm and not
more than 20mm and shall be 760mm in depth and at least 6.1m wide.
The post shall be 1.55m in height from the surface of the court and shall remain vertical when the net
is strained. The Pole or posts are placed on the double side lines irrespective of whether singles or
doubles is played. The posts or supports must not extend into the court beyond the side lines.
Racket
The badminton racket is one of the most important tools a player has
in the game. Badminton rackets are much lighter than most other
sports rackets because they are made from materials such as carbon
fiber or lighter metals such as aluminum. Parts of the racket include
the head, throat, shaft and handle with a maximum length of 27.77
inches and a width of 9 inches. The Strings are stretched across the
opening of the racket in a checkerboard pattern, which acts as the
hitting surface. Badminton rackets can vary widely in cost depending
on whether they are purchased as part of a basic backyard set or as
more expensive professional models.
