It’s Ok to eat fast food occasionally but fast food is high in calories. So, if you often eat a
hamburger and chips you can easily become obese. You must eat homemade food because it
is healthier.
Everybody knows that fast food is cheap and quick.
However, fast food is not as tasty as homemade food.
Young people prefer to eat pizzas, hamburgers and French
fries but they should eat soup instead. Fast food companies
spend lots of money to make people believe that fast food
is cool. The average American eats three hamburgers with
French fries a week. Is it surprising that 25% of American
teenagers are obese? Health care is devoted to create new
eating habits so that we can have a healthier generation.
(47)
Obesity can lead to other diseases such as diabetes and heart strokes. This is why America is
now starting to fight back against the fast food companies. They are stopping serving fast food
in school cafeterias and restaurants serving traditional food are opening now.

the waiter was very kind.

Self-Assessment Unit 2
A. Choose the correct option.
Surveys show that children are addicted to their smart phones and other gadgets. It seems as if
teenagers are spending a lot of time connected to their screens, that’s because they are connected
about a quarter of their day to be exact.
The average teen between 13 and 18 spends about nine hours a day consuming media – and that is
outside of their school and homework. Children aged 8 to 12, are spending about six hours in front of
the screens. They are watching shows, playing games, connecting on social media and listening to
music – sometimes all at the same time.
Multitasking is the new normal when it comes to homework time. Most teens listen to music while
doing their homework, but many also watch TV (51%) and text (60%). Being asked teenagers say they
don’t think it is a problem and don’t believe it has any impact on the quality of their work. However,
there is evidence that suggests multitasking makes it harder to retain information and that you might
perform poorly on the tasks you are doing.
Another fact surveys find is that it seems children spend more time consuming media than connecting
with their parents and even their teachers.
D. Write an email to your friend telling him/ her what your plans are in a near future and in a
long-term future. (80-100).

the north and south poles will melt and the sea levels will rise. If more
places become hotter, there will be more mosquitoes that can affect our

A powerful earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday afternoon, toppling buildings, killing children
in a school that collapsed, rattling the capital and sending people flooding into the streets for the
second time in just two weeks.
The earthquake hit shortly after 1 p.m. about 100 miles from Mexico
City. It registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1, causing heavy and
prolonged shaking in the capital.
Tuesday’s earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of another
major disaster: the 1985 quake that killed as many as 10,000 people in
Mexico.
It also came less than two weeks after the most powerful earthquake
in Mexico in a century, an 8.1 magnitude quake that killed at least 90
people, destroyed thousands of homes and was felt by tens of millions of
people.
Paul Earle, a seismologist with the United States Geological Survey, said it was too early to say
whether there was any connection between the two quakes. Although the first was much
stronger, the one on Tuesday was much closer to Mexico City, causing more damage in the
capital.
Residents in Mexico City, having just experienced shaking from that quake, said the tremors
on Tuesday were far worse.
(112)

What happened? A powerful earthquake struck Mexico
How did it happen? There were 2 earthquakes but the first caused

VOLCANOES
Volcanoes are Earth’s geologic architects. They created more than 80% of our 1 __c__. Lava rivers
spread into the countryside. There are volcanoes on every continent, even Antarctica.
1500 volcanoes are still considered active around the world. Some 75 % of the world’s active
volcanoes are around a 25.000 mile long horseshoe-shaped zone from the southern of South
America across the west 2 ___h__, trough the Bering Sea to Japan, and on the New Zealand.
However the volcanoes of the ring aren’t geologically connected. In other words, a volcanic 3
___e_ is not related to one in Alaska.
Volcanic eruptions cause many dangers apart from lava flows. It´s important to considerate local
authorities’ advice during 4 __a__ and evacuate regions when necessary. Other examples of
danger is avalanches of hot rocks, toxic gas and ash.
The ash is made of sharp fragments of rocks and volcanic glass. It’s not only dangerous to inhale,
it’s heavy and builds up quickly, 5 __b__.
Scientist monitor volcanoes near large population centers. Volcanos give some warning of
eruption. However, it is impossible to say exactly when or even if a volcano will erupt.
E. Write a paragraph. Your friend often suffers from headaches; give him/her a home remedy
and some advices. (80-100) words.
