Statement of Purpose

My intentions are honest and sincere towards my decision so here I am applying, I

strongly believe in the words of Adlai E. Stevenson: "If we value the pursuit of
knowledge, we must be free to follow wherever that search may lead us" This time
I am writing with more in-depth knowledge of my decision for my degree,
university, destination, costs, opportunities after completion and every almost
every aspect of this decision.

Introduction:

MY name is ZEESHAN IRFAN and I am 17 years old. I belong to a well-

educated family. My father is a business man. Business includes buying and selling
of wood. We are a family of seven members. I live with my parents and four other
siblings that are elder than me and are still in their secondary school. My mother
is a housewife and loves cooking. She is all the time curious to try new recipes.
My parents have always been providing encouragement to make certain that we
acquire foremost guidance and prosper in our lives.

We are in the middle of a digital revolution. The amount of data being generated
in the enterprises is increasing tremendously and organizations are struggling to
keep up with the influx. Coming from a background of Pre-Engineering I have
developed a passion to study into the field of CIVIL Engineering.

Academic Background:
I have completed my Secondary education from DAISY PUBLIC BOYS HIGH
SCHOOL Faisalabad. My natural interest in Science & Mathematics, analytical
ability, and capacity for hard work helped me to perform well in all academic
areas. I secured myself a seat in Associate-Engineer in one of the reputed
college, GOVT. STAFF TRAINING COLLEGE Faisalabad. My journey
towards achieving my dreams started here. My dedication and keen interest for
the Science & Mathematics motivate me to take an undergraduate program in
Civil Engineering from Edith Cowan University.

Selecting Australia as Study Destination:

Australia offers an educational experience that makes a real difference. It provides

a unique kind of education and a learning style that encourages one to be
innovative, creative and think independently. Graduates from Australia are very
successful in finding jobs and hold prominent positions worldwide. One of the
most appealing aspects of the country for international students is the quality of
scientific research. Australia is at the forefront of new technology and innovations.
Students who study in Australia can take advantage from the country’s impressive
technology and research resources. Australian qualifications are recognized by
employers and leading educational institutions in many countries around the
world. Moreover, most courses and training undertaken by international students
in Australia are covered by Australian Qualification Framework (AQF). Australia
provides the world’s most rigorous protection for international students through
ESOS.

The city that I have chosen is Perth and the reason behind it is that Perth is the
best city for education in Australia. According to the QS ranking of best student
cities of 2017, Perth is the top best city for international students in the world.
Apart from highly efficacious system of education, Perth rates highly in
entertainment, health care, research and development, tourism and sport, making
it the world's most live able city for the seventh year in a row in 2017.
Studying at Edith Cowan University:

Edith Cowan University because it is ranked in the top 2 per cent of worldwide for
academic studies and research. The Civil Engineering program at Edith Cowan

things. The international education will give me the training and the caliber to
meet the global clients. I look forward to being an active contributing member of
the student community at Edith Cowan University.

Study a Diploma of Civil Engineering Leading Bachelors of Civil

Engineering:

Civil engineering is the most diverse branch of engineering directly related to

facilities and systems used by the public in their daily life. Civil engineers are
engaged in the planning, designing, construction and maintenance of bridges,
buildings, foundations, dams, sanitary and solid waste disposal systems, highways,
airport facilities, transportation systems, waterways, hydroelectric installations,
pipelines, coal preparation, loading facilities, and other systems and structures.
Engineering students get a sound basic knowledge of science and a set of core
courses in humanities and social sciences. Design is incorporated across the Civil
Engineering curriculum, and the design experience begins early with some
exposure in the Surveying and Mechanics of Materials courses. Design exposure
continues during the junior and senior years with 11 courses having a design
component for a total of 19 hours. The design component is completed with a
capstone design course in which student teams are responsible for the completion
of a comprehensive civil engineering project. It involves several civil engineering
disciplines with oral and written presentations of the project.

Meaningful design experience is also included in several of the required and

elective civil engineering courses. Required courses and required elective courses
which include significant design content are Hydraulic Engineering, Sanitary
Engineering, Highway Design, the structural design elective (Structural Steel
Design or Reinforced Concrete Design), the required geotechnical elective
(Foundation Design or Groundwater and Seepage), the environmental elective
(Advanced Sanitary or Advanced Hydraulics), and Civil Engineering Projects.
One of the two additional electives (one CVLE and one Technical) also contain
significant design content.

The Civil Engineering Projects class, originally designed to serve the "capstone
design" concept, requires the students to completely design a civil engineering
project encompassing several of the civil engineering disciplines. Discussion and
consideration of constraints such as economic factor, safety, reliability, aesthetics,
ethics, and social impact are incorporated as a normal part of most design
courses. Aesthetics and social impact are stressed in the Sanitary Engineering
course; and ethics, safety, social impact, and professional issues are covered in
the Civil Engineering Seminar course. In addition to design, the Civil Engineering
Projects course includes principles of project and/or civil engineering, cost
analysis and estimating, and scheduling. It highlights the significance of
developing well-prepared civil engineering professionals, especially within the
context of Malaysia. As a result, we demonstrate the essential need for preparation
of the respective academic program.

Above all, it would be a blessing to be able to learn under the guidance of the
professors at Edith Cowan University. I am excited about entering into this new
phase of my life and it is my belief that I would be able to make a positive
contribution to the University.

Comparison of Bachelor’s Degree in Australia and Pakistan:

Initially, I had plans to pursue my higher studies in Pakistan but unfortunately

Universities does not offer the graduate programs in advanced disciplines. As we
already know the jobs related to Civil Engineering is increasing tremendously but
these jobs required high skills which can only be acquired by higher education in
this field. I have done my research on other English countries like UK and USA
and found that Australia is the perfect destination for me for several reasons.
Firstly, Australia’s standard of living is amongst the highest in the world. Living
expenses and tuition costs are considerably lower in Australia than they are in the
United States and United Kingdom. International students are able to work part
time while they study, allowing them to offset their living costs. There is also the
possibility of scholarships, which can help to lower the cost of studying in
Australia for international students. Secondly Schools and employers all over the
world recognize degrees from Australian schools. Graduates from Australian
schools are highly sought after due to the impressive international reputation of
the Australian education system. This system is carefully regulated by the
Australian government in order to maintain the high standards of education
associated with the country. And finally, I found that Australian culture and its
society is much better for international students as compared to other countries.

Comparison with Other Education Providers in Australia:

There are certainly a lot of good options one could opt for while deciding where
to study in Australia. During my decision I came across a lot of other good
Universities where my preferred course was offered. Some universities I initially
shortlisted were Curtin University, La Trobe University, Edith Cowan University,
and Federation University. I had the wish of studying in Perth because of it being
labelled as the best city study destination for students. I narrowed down to Edith
Cowan University and Curtin University; these universities captivated my
interest more than any other educational institutes in Australia.

Of these two I went on to choose Edith Cowan University because of the

availability of specialized courses to be chosen in Civil Engineering, these are
not available everywhere and in my opinion, are very essential in the fast-
growing world where Civil Engineering is of utmost importance. Curtin
University also has an active student resource center and providing internship
opportunities to its graduates which focuses on providing education with real life
experiences.

This program caught my eye more than the other universities because it enables
me to deal with problems faced working in a firm back at Pakistan by giving me
hindsight of how things work in the real-world. Apart from these I also opted for
Edith Cowan University because it campuses are at ideal locations.

Learning Outcome of Bachelor’s Degree from Edith Cowan

University:

I have chosen to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (C.E) as it will

develop me personally and professionally, an International degree will distinguish
me from the local Graduates and will enable me to work in on a senior managerial
position in the corporate sector of Pakistan, furthermore it will groom me
personally and expand my mind towards the developments being made in the field
all over the world.

Studying in Australia will give me a chance to learn in a multi-culture community;

this will open my mind towards other traditions and will help me to handle a
diverse workforce anywhere in the world.
Career Prospects:

Civil Engineers can find job in Government departments, private and public-sector
industries, research and teaching institution etc. Job opportunities for civil
engineers are expected to increase as fact as the average for all jobs, although the
construction industry is vulnerable to fluctuations in the economy.

Civil engineers will always be needed to maintain and repair existing facilities and
structure and to construct new ones. After doing B.Sc. One can look for jobs in
road projects, building work, consultancy firms, quality testing laboratories or
housing societies. The experts say there is a high demand for experienced civil
engineers in developed countries.

Civil engineers are employed in all the major construction projects carried out by
the provincial or federal government, the railways, private construction
companies, military, engineering services, consultancy services etc.

Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up teaching or
they can open their own independent consultancy services.

Student Visa Condition and Policy:

I read and understand the terms and condition of Study Visa. I have to follow all
rules and regulation and some of those rules are, I have work limitation of only 40
hours per fort night, I must maintain enrolment in a registered course that is the
same level as, or at a higher level than, the registered course for which I got a
visa. I have to arrange and maintain adequate funds to maintain overseas student
health care (OSHC) and satisfy the student visa requirement that means I have
sufficient financial capacity to support my study and stay in Australia, I also have
to maintain my attendance and pass my papers.

Living and Financial Support:

My father is my sponsor. He will take care of all the expenses of my education,

living expenses and provide things which I will need during my educational time
period in Australia. I will stay at Cooper Plains which is located at a 20 min bus
ride away from Edith Cowan University. They also provide facilities that include
24-hour security, internet access, a swimming pool, a spa and laundry facilities,
this may cost me up to 300 AUD per week.

Conclusion:

To Conclude I would say that I’m a law-abiding citizen of my country and I want
to get the benefit of studying in prestigious institute of Australia so that I will get
the technical skills and improve myself and learn from the best faculty and latest
research. I want to serve for the betterment of my country and to achieve a suitable
position is related to Civil Engineering in my home town. Moreover, I am a
responsible citizen of my country, I know how to abide rules and regulation
similarly all the visa conditions of mine at Australia have been researched on and
I will fulfill all of them positively and with due respect, after all its my career.

I’ll be glad to provide you any further documents and information if required.
Your positive response regarding my application will be highly appreciable.

Yours Sincerely,
Zeeshan Irfan
