Unit Plan

Unit Topic: Hitting Year Level: 8 Unit Length: 12 Lessons

Unit Overview/Aims
Students will learn the skills and rules of the game of softball. By the end of this unit, students
will be able to demonstrate control and accuracy when performing specialised movement
sequences and skills. In addition, students will apply movement concepts and refine strategies
to suit different movement situations.

Relevant Content Descriptors (cut and paste from the relevant AC/MYP areas)
Provide and apply feedback to develop and refine specialised movement skills in a range
of challenging movement situations (ACPMP099)
Develop, implement and evaluate movement concepts and strategies for successful
outcomes with and without equipment (ACPMP101)
Devise, implement and refine strategies demonstrating leadership and collaboration skills
when working in groups or teams (ACPMP105)
Achievement standards/Performance Standards (cut and paste the relevant areas)
Students demonstrate leadership, fair play and cooperation across a range of movement and
health contexts. They apply decision-making and problem-solving skills when taking action to
enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing. They apply and transfer movement
concepts and strategies to new and challenging movement situations. They apply criteria to
make judgements about and refine their own and others’ specialised movement skills and
movement performances. They work collaboratively to design and apply solutions to movement
challenges.

10 minutes Explanation of bases and rules

 Two teams (of nine players) alternate turns at batting
and fielding (often called defence).
 The aim for the team batting is to advance a runner
around all bases to the home plate to score runs.
 The defending team tries to defend its bases by getting
three outs and not allowing the batting team to score.
 The team that scores the most runs in seven innings
wins. (A tiebreaker procedure comes into play if the
scores are tied after the seventh innings.)
 Each team’s innings ends when three of its batters
have been ruled out and then the team that was
defending goes in to bat.

 There are four bases (first base, second base, third

base and home plate) on the field of play.
 The lines between the bases are generally 45 to 60ft
(approximately 12 to 18m) apart and when joined they
form a ‘diamond’.
 Inside the diamond is the infield which contains the
pitcher’s plate from which the pitcher throws the ball
underarm; outside the baselines is the outfield.
 Any ball going outside the first or third base line is a
foul ball (runners are not allowed to advance and the
batter gets another try unless the ball was caught in the
air, in which case they are out).

A batter or runner is out in the following circumstances:

 If the ball the batter has just hit is caught without first
bouncing.
 The ball is thrown to a base before a runner gets there.
 A player running between bases is tagged by the ball
(touched by the ball or the glove of the defending
player).
 If three strikes are called by the umpire.
 They run more than 1 metre out of the base line to
avoid being tagged.

Small sided game of softball

Game consisting of batter, pitcher, catcher, 2 fielders and 1 st
10 minutes base.

Batter is to hit ball and run to first base without getting out. 3
successful attempts per student before changing with another
20 minutes student.

Lesson 5

5 minutes Warm up – Stretching / jogging

5 minutes Recap of last lesson (softball rules)

5 minutes Introduce softball scoring

Run is scored when student runs through all four bases
without getting out. 7 runs = side away.
