Tutorial Sheet – 05
1. A 33 KVA, 2200/220 V, 50 Hz single phase transformer has the following parameters:
Primary winding (HV side) resistance R1 = 2.4 Ω; leakage reactance X1 = 6.00 Ω.
Secondary winding (LV side) resistance R2 = 0.03 Ω; leakage reactance X2 = 0.07 Ω.
(a) Find the primary resistance and leakage reactance referred to secondary.
(b) Find the secondary resistance and leakage reactance referred to primary.
(c) Calculate the total ohmic loss at full load.
Calculate the voltage to be applied to the HV side, in order to obtain a short circuit current of 160 A
in the LV winding. Under these conditions, find the power input also.
Answer: 0.024 Ω, 0.06 Ω, 3.00 Ω, 7.00 Ω, 1216Watts, 1382.4 Watts

2. A 20 KVA, 2500/250 V, 50 Hz, single-phase transformer gave the following test result:
Open circuit test (on LV side) - 250V, 1.4A, 105 Watts.
Short circuit test (on HV. side) - 104 V, 8A, 320 Watts.
Compute the parameters of the approximate equivalent circuit referred to high-voltage and low-
voltage sides.
Answer: Referred to LV R = 595 Ω, X = 187 Ω, r = 0.05 Ω, x = 0.12 Ω
Referred to HV R = 59500 Ω, X = 18700 Ω, r=5 Ω, x = 12 Ω

Answer: 10.59%, 447.04 V, -2.656%, 513.28 V

4. A 10KVA , 2500/250 V, single phase transformer gave the following test results:
Open circuit test: 250V, 0.8 A, 50 W
Short Circuit test: 60V, 3A, 45 W
(a) Calculate the efficiency at ¼, ½, 1 of full load at 0.8 p.f.
(b) Calculate the load (KVA output) at which maximum efficiency occurs and also the value of
maximum efficiency at 0.8 p.f.
Answer: 97.32%, 98.28%, 98.4%, 7.9 KVA, 98.443%

5. A 220 V, 60Hz, single phase transformer has hysteresis loss of 340 watts and eddy current loss of
120 watts. If the transformer is operated from 230V, 50Hz supply mains, compute its total core
loss. Assume Steinmetz’s constant equal to 1.6.
Answer: Core loss = 539.3 W

6. The efficiency of 20 KVA, 2500/250 V, single phase transformer at unity p.f is 98% at rated load
