This document contains 11 multi-part power systems engineering problems related to calculating fault currents for generators, transformers and transmission lines. The problems involve determining initial symmetrical currents, sustained short-circuit currents, and subtransient currents for 3-phase faults at different points in systems consisting of generators supplying loads through circuit breakers and transformers. reactance of Xd”=19%, Xd’=26%, Xd=130%. It is operating at no load & rated voltage when a
3-phase short circuit occurs between breaker and the transformer. Find
(a) the sustained short-circuit current in the breaker,
(b) the initial symmetrical rms current in the breaker and
(c) the maximum possible dc component of the short-circuit current in the breaker.

2) The 3-phase transformer connected to the generator described in Question-1 is rated 100
MVA, 240Y/18∆ kV, X=10%. If a 3-phase short circuit occurs on the HV side of the
transformer at rated voltage & no load, find
(a) the initial symmetrical rms current in the transformer windings on the HV side and
(b) the initial symmetrical rms current in the line on the low voltage side.

3) A 60Hz generator is rated 500 MVA, 20 kV with It supplies a purely resistive

load of 400 MW at 20 kV. The load is connected directly across the terminals of the
generator. If all 3 phases of the load are short circuited simultaneously, find the initial
symmetrical rms current in the generator in per unit on a base of 500 MVA, 20 kV.

4) A 625 kVA generator with is connected to a bus through a circuit breaker

(CB), as shown in below figure connected through CBs to the same bus are three
synchronous motors rated 250 hp, 2.4 kV, 1.0 p.f., 90% efficiency with The
motors are operated at full load, unity p.f. and rated voltage with the load equally divided
among the machine.
(a) Draw the Impendence diagram with the impedances marked in pu on a base of 625
kVA, 2.4 kV.
(b) Find the symmetrical short-circuit current in amperes, which must be interrupted by
breaker A and B for a 3-phase fault at point P. Simplify the calculation by neglecting
the pre-fault condition.
(c) Repeat part (b) for a 3-phase fault at Point Q.
(d) Repeat part (b) for a 3-phase fault at Point R.

5) A 25 MVA, 11 kV generator with is connected through a transformer, line and a
transformer to a bus that supplies three identical motors as shown below. Each motor has

transformer is 25 MVA, 11/66 kV with a leakage reactance of 10%. The bus voltage at the
motors is 6.6 kV when A 3-phase fault occur at the point F for the specified fault calculation.
(a) the subtransient current in the fault,
(b) the subtransient current in the breaker B
(c) the momentary current in breaker B and
(d) the current to be interrupted by breaker B in 5 cycles.
Given: Reactance of the transmission line = 15% on a base of 25 MVA.
Assume that the system is operating on no-load when the fault occurs.

6) The generators are connected in parallel to the low voltage side of a 3-phase ∆-Y transformer
as shown in figure. Generator 1 is rated 50 MVA, 13.8 kV, Generator 2 is rated 25 MVA,
13.8 kV. Each generator has a subtransient reactance of 25%. The transformer is rated 75
MVA, 13.8∆/69Y kV with a reactance of 10%. Before the fault occurs, the voltage on the HT
side of the transformer is 66 kV. The transformer is unloaded and there is no circulating
current between the generators. Find the subtransient current in each generator when a 3-
phase short-circuit occurs on the HT of the transformer.
