PS Ex2

This document contains 7 electrical engineering problems related to analyzing electrical power systems. Problem 1 involves calculating short-circuit currents for a generator connected through a circuit breaker to a transformer experiencing a fault. Problem 2 examines fault currents for a transformer connected downstream of the generator. Problem 3 analyzes fault currents for a generator supplying a resistive load that experiences a fault. The remaining problems 4-7 contain additional short-circuit analysis questions.

Electrical Power System Analysis (ELE 411)

Exercise (2):

(1)
A generator connected through a 5-cycle circuit breaker to a transformer is rated
100MVA, 18 kV, with reactances of Xd’’ = 0.19 , Xd’ = 0.26 , and Xd = 130. It is
operating at no load and rated voltage when a three-phase short circuit occurs between
the breaker and the transformer. Find
(a) the sustained short-circuit current in the breaker
(b) the initial symmetrical rms current in the breaker
(c) the maximum possible DC component of the short-circuit current in the breaker.

(2)
The three-phase transformer connected to the generator in Prob. (1), rated 100 MVA,
240 Y / 18 Δ kV, X = 0.10. If a three-phase short circuit occurs on the high-voltage
side of the transformer at rated voltage and no load, find
(a) the initial symmetrical rms current in the transformer windings on the high-
voltage side
(b) the initial symmetrical rms current in the line on the low-voltage side.

(3)
A 60-Hz generator is rated 500 MVA , 20 kV , with Xd' = 0.20 per unit. It supplies a
purely resistive load of 400 MW at 20 kV. The load is connected directly across the
terminals of the generator. If all the three phases of the load are short-circuited
simultaneously. Find the initial symmetrical rms current in the generator in per unit on
a base of 500 MVA, 20 kV .

(5)
A synchronous generator with a 60 MVA, 15 MVA with a subtransient reactance of 0.12
pu, is connected to the grid through a line of 0.16 pu on the same base of the machine
rating. A symmetrical three phase fault occurred after the line terminals, determine the
subtransient fault current.

(6)
A 1000-MVA 20-kV, 60-Hz three-phase generator is connected through a 1000-MVA
20 kVΔ / 345-kV Y transformer to a 345-kV circuit breaker and a 345-kV transmission
line. The generator reactances are Xd’’ = 0. 7, Xd’ = 0.30, and Xd = 1.5 per unit. Its
time constants are Td’’ = 0.05, Td’ = 1.0 and TA 0.10 s. The transformer series
reactance is 0.10 per unit; transformer losses and exciting current are neglected. A three-
phase short-circuit occurs on the line side of the circuit breaker when the generator is
operated at rated terminal voltage and at no-load. The breaker interrupts the fault 3
cycles after fault inception. Determine:
(a) the subtransient current through the breaker in per-unit and in kA rms
(b) the rms fault current the breaker interrupts, assuming maximum dc offet. Neglect
the effect of the transformer on the time constants.
