In this lesson, you will learn all about matter. Did you know that
matter is everything around you? The clouds when you look up at the
sky, the ocean where the different water animals live and the trees
where you can see everywhere, it’s all matter. The people who use
many materials every day also matter. The lesson discusses the
properties of matter. Matter also undergoes changes which may
affect its properties and characteristics. Let’s know more in the
discussion.
Look at the picture below. What did you notice?
Matter is anything that has mass and occupied space. The space
occupied by matter is called volume.
A book and a table are examples of matter. The book occupies
space on the table. The table occupies space in a room.
Properties of Matter
Describes how something looks, feels, or acts. People usually
describe matter by the following characteristics:
Mass
Is how much there is of an object. It is commonly measured in
grams(g)or kilograms (kg).
For Examples:
Which has a greater mass: 1 kilogram of cotton or 1 kilogram of iron?
Although a kilogram of
cotton looks bulkier, it has
the same mass as a
kilogram of iron.
