ISOMER COMPOUNDS AND THEIR EXPLANATION

(1) (B)

Explanation: These two molecules have the same molecular formula (C5H10).
It also contains the same number of bonds (5 bonds). There is also a double
bond from the central atom, which shows their similarity.

(2) (C)

Explanation: These two molecules have the same molecular formula (C5H8).
It also contains the same number of bonds (6 bonds). There is also a triple
bond from the central atom, which shows their similarity.

(3) (E)

Explanation: These two molecules have the same molecular formula

(C5H12O). It also contains the same number of bonds (5 bonds). All of the
elements are connected by a single bond, which shows their similarity. In
addition, both of the molecular compound contains the functional group
(OH) attached at the carbon atom.

(4) (A)

Explanation: These two molecules have the same molecular formula (C5H12).
It also contains the same number of bonds (4 bonds). All of the elements are
connected by a single bond, which shows their similarity.

(5) (D)

Explanation: These two molecules have the same molecular formula (C6H14).
It also contains the same number of bonds (5 bonds). All of the elements are
connected by a single bond, which shows their similarity.

ACTIVITY 3: How Many Valence Electrons Do I Have?

Provide the valence electrons of each atom in a molecule. Write them on

your answer sheet.

Molecule Valence Electrons

Silicon has 4 valence electrons while Hydrogen has 1 valence

SiH4 electron.
4 + 1(4) = 4 + 4 = 8 valence electrons

Sulfur has 6 valence electrons while Oxygen also has 6

SO3 valence electrons
6 + 6(3) = 6 + 18 = 24 valence electrons

Hydrogen has 1 valence electron while Sulfur has 6 valence

H2S electrons
1(2) + 6 = 2 + 6 = 8 valence electrons

Carbon has 4 valence electrons, Hydrogen has 1 valence

CH2Br2 electron, while Bromine has 7 valence electrons
4 + 1(2) + 7(2) = 4 + 2 + 14 = 20 valence electrons

Hydrogen has 1 valence electron, Carbon has 4 valence
HCN electrons, while Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons.
1 + 4 + 5 = 10 valence electrons

Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons and Hydrogen has 1

valence electron. The compound will give off 1 valence
NH4+
electron.
5 + 1(4) – 1 = 5 + 4 – 1 = 8 valence electrons

Phosphorus has 5 valence electrons and Oxygen has 6

valence electrons. The compound will receive 1 valence
PO4-
electron.
5 + 6(4) + 1 = 5 + 24 + 1 = 30 valence electrons

Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons Oxygen has 6 valence

NO3- electrons. The compound will receive 1 valence electron.
5 + 6(3) + 1 = 5 + 18 + 1 = 24 valence electrons

Carbon has 4 valence electrons and Oxygen has 6 valence

CO32- electrons. The compound will receive 2 valence electrons
4 + 6(3) + 2 = 4 + 18 + 2 = 24 valence electrons

Carbon has 4 valence electrons, Hydrogen has 1 valence

electron, and Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. The
CHO2-
compound will receive 1 valence electron
4 + 1 + 6(2) + 1 = 4 + 1 + 12 + 1 = 18 valence electrons

ACTIVITY 4: My Lewis Structure Is…
