ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOY OF HUMAN MOVEMENT

Lesson 01:Terminologies in Anatomy & Physiology

Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. identify the different terminologies used in anatomy and
physiology;
b. locate the different parts of the body using the different
anatomical terms;and
c. show importance in understanding different anatomical terms
by tracing the parts of the body.
d.
Readings:
Anatomy
– science of structure
– relationships revealed by dissection (cutting apart)
– imaging techniques
Physiology
– science of body functions
– normal adult physiology is studied in this class
– some genetic variations occur
Anatomy
– Study of structure and the relationships among
structures.

Subdivisions

Surface Anatomy - study of superficial markings

Regional Anatomy - The study of specific areas of the body (e.g.
head, trunk)
Systemic Anatomy - Study of the eleven (11) specific organ
systems
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOY OF HUMAN MOVEMENT

Physiology
 Considers the operation of specific organ systems

 Renal – kidney function

 Neurophysiology – workings of the nervous system

 Cardiovascular – operation of the heart and blood

vessels

Directional Terms
1.Superior and Inferior – toward
and away from the head,
respectively.
2.Anterior and Posterior –
toward the front and back of the
body.
3.Medial and Lateral – toward the
midline, away from the midline.
4.Proximal and Distal – closer to
and farther from the origin of the
body part (or from the torso).
5. Superficial and Deep – toward

and away from the body surface.

6. Cranial and Caudal – toward the head and toward the tail.
