 Arrangement of events and dates in order of their
occurrence.
 Terms associated:
 BC: Before Christ
 AD: Anno Dominus ( In the year of our Lord)
 BCE : Before Common Era- Same as BC
 CE: Common Era- Same as AD
 c. : Circa- Approximate year

It can be divided into 3 parts: Pre-history, Proto History and History

Pre-History of India
 The earliest traces of human existence
go back to the period between 3,00,000
and 2,00,000 BC.
 Used stones as their primary tool.
 Human evolution took place in this era.
The modern human being first appeared
around 36000 BC.
 Initially man was a food gatherer and
depended on nature for food. He learnt
to control fire which helped him to
improve his way of living.
 The wheel was an important invention.
Towards the end of the Neolithic period
 Metals like copper and bronze were
used.

Palaeolithic Age

 Palaeo = Old . Lithic: Stone.


 It was an age of hunting and
food gathering culture.
 The tools were usually made of
hard rock called Quartzite and
hence the Paleolithic men were
called as “Quartzite Man”.
 Fossil of Homo erectus, from
Hathnaura (Narmada Basin), of
this age has been found.
 Other varieties found:
Ramapithecus

Mesolithic Age

 Age of hunters and


gatherers
 This age reflects a more
specialized and efficient
food collection as well,
which led to the
beginning of plant
cultivation or the
introduction of
agriculture.
 Crude weapons were
used. Pottery making was
in its developmental
phase

Neolithic Age

 Age of Food Gatherers


and producers
 This age also witnessed
the domestication of
animals and cultivation
of plants.
 First domesticated
animals - dog, goat,
sheep.
 Earliest cereals grown -
wheat, barley.
