III. Learning Activities: Teacher's Activity 1. Prayer Pupils' Activity

The document describes a science lesson on soil erosion given by a teacher to students. It involves dividing students into groups to perform hands-on activities demonstrating how water and wind can cause soil erosion. For the water erosion activity, one group pours water through a sprinkler onto a mound of sand to see it flow down and mix with the sand. For the wind erosion activity, another group uses a fan on boxes of dry and wet sand to see the dry sand blow away more easily. After the activities, the class discusses their observations and the teacher confirms that water and wind are agents of soil erosion. The teacher then shows a video identifying additional agents of soil erosion caused by human activities.

1. Prayer
Before we enter to the exciting world of
science, let us seek the supervision of our dear
Almighty Father through an opening prayer.

Dear Lord, we thank you for the gift of life

today.

You allow us to have another day to praise

you and see you glory.
Thank you for the love and protection you
have given, especially in this time of
pandemic.

Bless us father with your wisdom as we begin

our class.
Help us to focus our mind and hearts on what
we are about the learn.
Inspire us by your Holy Spirit as we think and
listen.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover
the world around us.
Lord, we thank you and let your will be done
in our lives.

We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus.

our game is “wheel of fortune. I will spin the
wheel and the name to be chosen is the lucky
one today. He/she will answer the question.
Okay let’s spin the wheel.

The lucky one today is______

And the question is. What is the difference
between weathering and soil erosion?

Very good! Let’s give each other three

claps.

There are dusts on our feet.

there is a boy going to school. So, class the boy

On your way from home to school, you can
see rocks and soil around. You stepped on
these soil and rocks. Now, look at your shoes
and pants? What can you notice at your slippers
and pants after walking or running?
B. Exploration Understand the directions/ procedures carefully.

will group you into two.

But before we start, let us recall the

standards to be followed in doing group
activities.
(Teacher will perform the activity.)

Very good!

Children, Teacher Erica will perform the

activity. Observe the activity so you can answer
the questions. IS THAT Okay CLEAR?
2. Activity Proper
, let’s have Group 1. Group 2 just wait for your turn. You can watch the activity of Group 1 to know more
about agents of soil erosion.

Group 1
So, the materials that we need are:
I. Materials:
basin full of sand
sprinkler (tin can which is open at one end with tiny holes on the other end)
container of water
II. Procedure:
1. Get a basin of sand and make a mound.
2. Hold the sprinkler with one hand on top of the mound.
3. Pour the water through the sprinkler.
4. Observe what happens to the soil as water runs through.
5. Answer the questions below:
a. What happens to the water when it fell to the mound?
b. What happened to the sand when water moved down the mound?
c. Where did the sand go?

Who wants to try? Any representatives in Group 1? Okay pour the water through the sprinkler. Look at
the soil and observe what happens. Another one representative from group 1? Thank you, these are the
questions that you need to answer.

Okay Group 2 it’s your turn, group 1 answer the questions assigned to you while group 2 are performing
their activity.

Group 2
So, the materials that we need are:

I. Materials:
box
desk fan
can of dry sand
can of wet sand
II. Procedure:
1. Get a wooden box and fill one side with dry sand and the other side with wet
sand.
2. Get a desk fan and face it in front of the box of soil.
Who wants to try? Any representative from Group 2? Okay, so turn on the fan and switch it to the
strongest. Turn the button three times. Put your hand in front of the fan and observe what you feel. And
also observe the sand as air moves through it. Another representative from group 2These are the questions
that you need to answer.

C. Explanation
1. Presentation of the output
2. Finding Out
Paste your answer on the board.
a. Group 1
What happened to the water when it fell to the
mound? The water moved down the mound.

What happened to the sand when water moved The sand fell down and mixed with water and
down the mound? flowed together with it.

Where did the sand go? The sand goes to different directions where the
water flowed.

What is the agent of soil erosion in your activity? Water is the agent of soil erosion.

Let’s give group 1 a fantastic clap!

b. Group 2

What happened to the dry sand as the air moved

through it? The dry sand was easily blown away by the
blowing air.
What happened to the wet sand as the air move
through it? The wet sand was not easily blown away by
the blowing air.
Which type of soil is easily blown by the wind?
Dry sand/soil is easily blown by the wind
What is the agent of erosion of soil in your compared to wet sand/soil.
activity?
Wind is the agent of soil erosion.
Let’s give group 2 a good job clap!
D. Elaboration
1. Deepening
Aside from water and wind, there are also other
agent of soil erosion.
Let us find it out in the video presentation I have for
you.

But before that, what are the standards to be

followed in watching a video clip/ presentation.
Sit properly.
Understand the video.
Jot down important notes about the video.
(Pupils will watch the video clip.)
Did you understand the video?
Yes, we did!
Based on the video that you have watched, what are
the agents of soil erosion?
Based on the video, the factors that can cause
soil erosion are people or human activities such
as farming, deforestation, housing construction
and mining.
Aside from human activities, animals can
also cause erosion by overgrazing.
Even plants can cause soil erosion based on
the video.
(Answers may vary.)

Amazing answers!
2. Generalization The agents of soil erosion are water, wind, people/
What are the agents of soil erosion? human activities, animals, plants and slope of land.

Kindly read, all together

All right!

2. Application
Class, I have prepared another activity for you.
I will give you an envelope with picture and strip of words.

Directions: Look at the pictures. Identify the agent of soil erosion in each picture then paste it in
front.

Valuing
How did you find the activity?
It is enjoyable and challenging.
How did you come up with your output?
Cooperation made us come up with our output.
Is it important to lessen soil erosion? Why?
Yes, because it can avoid landslides and the like.
(Answers may vary.)

As a grade 5 pupil, how can you help or at

least lessen soil erosion?
I will avoid watering the plants with much water.
I will plant different kinds of vegetation.
(Answers may vary.)
That’s right!
