TOPIC: Research and Practice in Earthquake Engineering
Speaker: Dr. Sifat Muin
Earthquake is a natural disaster which causes temporary and permanent deformation of the
structures. It can cause annihilation and destruction at a large scale. The most fascinating part
of this natural disaster is that it can’t be predicted or foreseen, and that is the thing which
makes it so dangerous. earthquake engineering has become a very important research interest
for the Civil engineering graduates. This subject consists of basic knowledge of different
areasof science and engineering. Earthquake engineering (EE) focuses on reducing seismic
effects by analyzing its behavior and its past history, and give a detailed picture and better
understanding of this phenomenon. Basically, earthquake engineering looks into the
structural design and model of a construction, runs some seismic analysis to foresee the
future when an earthquake will occur. earthquake load has been divided into two types-
Lateral & Dynamic. The analysis can be done in two process also (Static and dynamic).
Response spectrum method and Time history analysis are the two dynamic methods. The
most important part of the seismic design of any structure is the seismic load resisting
systems, which can be resisted by moment resisting frames , shear walls ,braced frames those
are capable of withstand the sudden lateral loads caused by the earthquake . The Earthquake
Engineering Research Institute (EERI) is a leader in dissemination of earthquake engineering
research related information both in the U.S. and globally. In any given year, the world can
expect 18 earthquakes of magnitude greater than 7.0, most of which (more than 80%) will
likely occur on the so-called Ring of Fire, which circumscribes the Pacific Plate and includes
a portion of the California coast. PEER(Pacific Earthquake Engineering
Research Center ) is a specialized research center which consists of 11 institutions and 9
affiliated members. PEER Mission focuses on Integrated Performance-based Engineering
Methodology. PEER core institutions have very high facilitated laboratories with some
unique features and unique simulation tests. PEER’s main objectives are hybrid simulation,
enabling, ground motion modeling projects, structural health monitoring, Vision based
SHM(Simple Harmonic Motion) etc. Machine learning is very important in higher studies
and research. It is the science of making computers learn & act as humans to improve their
learning over time in autonomous fashion, using data & information . Human machine
collaboration framework(H-MC) is also a very interesting research field. Bangladesh is in the
danger zone of earthquake. The country is likely to face huge loss due to the
calamity, as Bangladesh lies on the seismically active zone. The loss will be immense just
because of the improper building codes and unplanned urbanization. The government and the
authorities need to take this issue seriously and act according to it. Earthquake engineering
should be practiced in Bangladesh.
