COURSE GUIDE

I. Course Title: College & Advanced Algebra

Course Description: This course builds upon the students’ knowledge on properties of real number
system, operations on different types of algebraic expressions, and the solution of
various types of equations and inequalities. The course also covers the prerequisites to
transcendental functions, including the characteristics of their graphs and applications.

II. Course Overview:

A. Introduction
An introductory college and advanced algebra course, often referred to as "Algebra 1" is a
requirement for many academic programs. Some college algebra courses list the intended
audience, such as math, engineering or business students who need the class to further their
academic goals. Algebra course descriptions vary by college or university, but most cover the same
topics and have similar prerequisites.
The content in a college algebra course centers on algebraic relationships, functions and
graphs that go beyond basic high school algebra. Students learn to solve for one or two unknown
variables in a variety of complex equations. They also learn to graph intermediate-level algebraic
functions, such as single-variable polynomial functions. Instructors cover topics such as quadratic
and rational inequalities, linear and quadratic variables, remainder and factor theorems and
exponential and logarithmic functions.

B. Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the students would be able to:
1. Acquire and demonstrate knowledge on the concepts of algebra;
2. Show mastery in the process of finding solutions to mathematical equations, factoring
and simplifying rational expressions, solving equations, formulating and graphing
functions and using appropriate computer applications/ software and calculators in
solving and graphing and
3. Applying mathematical concepts, interpreting and discussing results and applying them
to real life situations;
4. Appreciate the value of neatness of work, patience and endurance in solving problems.
