Subtraction of Integers 4A Lesson Plan

The document outlines a lesson plan on subtracting integers that introduces the objectives and procedures. It explains that to subtract integers, the subtraction operation should be changed to addition by changing the subtrahend to its opposite, then finding the sum. Examples are provided to demonstrate subtracting integers by first changing the operation to addition and then the sign of the number being subtracted before finding the sum. Students are given an assignment with practice problems to solve.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

Subtraction of Integers

I. Objectives
At the end of the period the pupil must have
A. Demonstrate an understanding of how to subtract integers
B. Learn how to convert a subtraction operation into addition of the opposite
C. Learn how to subtract one integer from another
D. Learn how to perform subtraction with more than two integers.

Content Standards:
The learners will be able to formulate challenging situations involving
subtraction of integers.

Learning Competency:
The learners will be able to illustrate the properties of subtraction
on the set of integers.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Integers
Subtopics: Subtraction of Integers
Reference
Materials:

III. Procedure

Preliminary Activities

1. Organization
2. Prayer

Are you ready to pray, class? Yes, we are.

Okay then, let us bow our heads and put our In the name of the Father, the Son, and of the Holy
presence to the Lord. Spirit, Amen.
Oh, God our Father, we praise and adore you for
everything in this world. Forgive us for the sins that
we have done. We give you thanks Oh God
Almighty for all the blessings you had given us
most especially for the Blessing of life. Thank you
for guiding us all throughout our life. Oh God, we
ask for your guidance in everything we are going to
do. Give us hope and strength to overcome every
struggle we will face. Give us the knowledge we
need for our discussion today. We pray this in Jesus
name, Amen.
3. Introduce teacher’s name
I am teacher Rose Ann Mae De Chavez. For today,
I will continue to discuss about the operation of
integers which is the Subtraction.

4. Warm-up

Lesson Proper

Activity

Analysis

Class, do you still remember what are the rules of

sign in Adding Integers? -yes ma’am
Then, what are we going to do if we have two
consecutive signs Student A: Add, and then copy the sign

Very Good!

How about, when we have different signs? Student B: Subtract and copy the sign of the larger
number.
Very Good class!

Now that we are moving on to Subtraction of

Integers, we will add two more rules aside from
that.

Abstraction

In our last lesson, we learned how to perform

addition with integers. In this lesson we will learn
how to perform subtraction with integers. The
subtraction process will only take on two additional
steps from the addition process. When we subtract
one integer from one another.

Note: Leave the minuend or leftmost number

unchanged
*Change the subtraction operation into addition
*Change the subtrahend or number being
subtracted away into its opposite (change the sign)
*Find the sum of the two integers

Application

Example 1.

-11 - 5

*Change the subtraction operation into addition

-11 - 5 → -11 + 5
*Change the subtrahend or number being subtracted
away into its opposite (change the sign)

-11 + 5 → -11 + (-5)

*Find the sum of two integers

-11 + (-5) = -16

-11 - 5 = -16

Example 2.

-8 - (-12)

*Change the subtraction operation into addition

-8 - (-12) → -8 + (-12)

*Change the subtrahend or number being subtracted

away into its opposite (change the sign)

-8 + (-12)→ -8 + 12

*Find the sum of two integers

-8 + 12 = 4

-8 - (-12) = 4

Example 3.

-29 - (-15)

*Change the subtraction operation into addition

-29 - (-15) → -29 + (-15)

*Change the subtrahend or number being subtracted

away into its opposite (change the sign)

-29 + (-15) → -29 + 15

*Find the sum of two integers

-29 + 15 = -14

-29 - (-15) = -14

IV. Evaluation

The teacher will randomly call 3 students that will go in front to answer. The
teacher will give them one equation to solve if they really understand the topic.
V. Assignment

Find the difference of the following integers

1. -13 - 5
2. 8 - (-4)
3. 26 - 11
4. -15 - (-11)
5. 5 - (-13)
6. -19 - 13
7. 16 - 19
8. -17 - (-21)
9. -32 - 17
10. 19 - (-9)
