Torsion of Circular Shafts
Torsion of Circular Shafts
Theory of pure torsion or Derivation of Torsion formula
A circular shaft is said to be in the state of pure torsion when
it is subjected to torque, without being acted upon by any bending of
the moment or axial force. OR; if shaft is subjected to the two
opposite turning moment it is said to be in pure torsion.
Theory of pure torsion is framed in order to describe the
behavior of shafts subjected to torque. In theory of pure torsion we
derive equations that help to find shear stress and angle of twist of
the shaft.
Torsion of Circular Shafts
Assumptions in theory of pure torsion
• The materiel of the shaft is homogenous
• The twist along the shaft is uniform.
• A plane section of material perpendicular to the axis of circular
member remains plane after the torque is applied.
• The shaft is of uniform circular section throughout
• All radii which are straight before twist remain straight after
twist.
• Shear tress is proportional to shear strain.
Torsion of Circular Shafts
Theory of pure torsion or Derivation of Torsion formula
When a circular shaft is subjected to torsion, shear stresses
are set up in the material of the shaft. To determine the magnitude of
the shear stresses at any point of the shaft, consider a shaft fixed at
one end AA and free at the other end BB as shown in figure.
