Course code: Tourism
FROM THE EXISTING TOURISM PRODUCTS Product and Development
Introduction:
• This lecture/presentation is intended to have you learners of 3rd year to conceptualize
tourism products into new dimensions where tourists will be looking forward in their
visits to different destinations.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

• Review and assess the current quality and standard of the country’s tourism product,
both existing and potential in terms of its diversity;
• Intensify promotion of existing products to current market to increase market share;
• Conduct market analysis to identify new and untapped markets with strong growth
• potential for existing products.
Discussion:

• Tourism products are the combination of what the tourist does

at the destination and the services used.
• Tourists always looks for new experiences from the destinations
including the facilities and amenities that they will be using.
• It is a great challenge for the tourism service and product
providers to offer something new in the market for continuous
patronage and increase revenue.
Tourism product development should:

• Be authentic and indigenous to reflect the unique attributes of the

destination;
• Have the support of the host community;
• Respect the natural and socio-cultural environments without damaging it;
• Be differentiated from competitors
• Be of sufficient scale to make a significant economic contribution

Forms of Tourism development

• To be able to produce a tourism development policy and plan, it is important

to understand the different forms of tourism development. From these,
planners can choose and or combine forms for a destination’s development.
Forms of Tourism
Development:
• 1.Resort-based tourism-a destination area that is
relatively self-contained and typically provides a wide
range of tourist facilities and services.
• Integrated resort – a planned development for
virtually exclusive use by tourists.
• Town resort – it combines the usual land uses and
activities of a town community
but is economically focused on resort activities.
• Retreat resort – small-scale, high quality planned
resorts located in remote areas such as a small island.
Forms of Tourism Development:

2. Urban tourism – it exists in big

cities through not primary area.
3. Special interest and adventure
tourism – refers to tourists usually in
small group who are traveling to learn
about a particular experience related
to an area or related to physical and
challenging activities.
Forms of Tourism Development:

4. Water transport tourism – capitalizes on activities on water.

• Cruise ship tourism – allows the tourist experience board and

lodging and other recreational activities on board a ship
intended for those purposes.

• River and canal tourism – involves tourists taking river boat

cruises with accommodation and meals provides on board the
boat.

• Yachting tourism – involves yachting as a major tourist

attraction or activity in a destination.
Forms of Tourism
Development:
5. Residential tourism – refers to cabins, houses,
apartments that are developed expressly as a vacation
or retirement homes and often include a combination
of these in one development.

6. Alternative forms – refers to non-traditional forms

of tourism development.

7. Sustainable tourism – small-scale, non-conventional,

non-mass specialized forms of tourism that is socially
and environmentally sensitive and respectful.
Formulating Tourism Policy:

-The following considerations should be accounted for when formulating

policies for tourism development:

• Tourism development policy is determined in the plan formation stage of

the planning process.

• Policies to be made refer to the type and extent of tourism that should be
developed in an area and any special factors to be considered in its
development.
Formulating Tourism Policy:

• Objectives are basic considerations in policy-making because the policy is the

expression of how objectives can be achieved. The political and economic
ideology of the country or region can also affect the policy.

• Policy also evolves from the survey, analysis and synthesis of any present tourism
development patterns and infrastructure, tourist attractions, and tourist markets.

• Socio-economic and environmental factors should also be taken into

consideration.
• Government should assume leading role in policy-making.
Policy Considerations:

-Role of the government – the role (passive or active) of government in

tourism development should be identified.

• Passive – government neither encourages or discourages tourism and

adopts measures for the general development process.
• Active – government has a general policy for developing tourism.
Policy Considerations:

• Environmental protection, cultural conservation and sustainable development

– policies should also be able to address these elements
• Reasons for developing tourism – may provide justification for development.

1. Economic reasons – employment, foreign exchange earnings, etc.

2. Social reasons – encourages cross-cultural exchange.
3. Social reasons for domestic tourism – provide opportunities
for recreation and political reasons.
4.Environmental and cultural conservation
Policy Considerations:

• Type of tourism to be developed – quality tourism relates to controlled

development aiming for high expenditure tourism markets.

• Extent of tourism development – should be appropriate for the country or

region; choice of small-scale or mass tourism.

• Growth rate of tourism – identify whether tourism development is on a slow,

medium or fast-paced level.

• Location and staging development

Inputs of Plan Formulation:

• The objectives and policies set forth the over-all parameters for the type of
development to be planned and provide a guide for formulating the plan.

Example:

Objective: minimize socio-cultural impacts of tourism

Policy: control and develop tourism

• Survey and analysis inputs – inputs from the survey that should be included in the
plan.
What is responsible tourism
product development?

• It is the process of developing assets into

tourism goods, services and experiences for
consumption. Responsible tourism product
development requires integrating
sustainability principles in the process.
What is commercial viability?

• Developing a tourism product does not

mean that visitors will come; following a
good product development process helps
ensure the business, product, or service can
compete effectively and make a profit.
Development of tourism related products and
experiences requires:

• Understanding existing supply and future demand for products

• Market research on visitor needs and satisfaction, product
development gaps and opportunities
• Understanding the types of experiences that a visitor market
seeks
• Assuring the value and sustainability of the tourism project
Ensuring viable responsible
tourism products by meeting
market needs:

1. Market Growth
- market visitation volume
-market size
-market interest and trends

2. Motivations and needs

-reason for travel
-kinds of experiences desired
Ensuring viable
responsible tourism
products by meeting
market needs:
3. Travel patterns
-means of travel
-length of stay
4. Spend
-level of money spent by visitor
types
-value to local development
5. Sustainability
-greatest interest in the destination

Week 8-TYPES OF
PRODUCT
DEVELOPMENT
Course code: DYCHETP313
Course description: Tourism Product and Development
Introduction
• This lecture is intended to have you learners of 3rd year to make use
of the knowledge gain and follow a good product development
process to ensure the business product or services can compete
effectively and make profit.

• At the end of this presentation, you are expected to:

• Understand existing supply and future demand for the products;
• Expand on products in destination and promote to existing market
segments;
• Attract new markets with strong growth potential;
Discussion:

• The creation of a tourism product is a

complex process. The product creation
process starts with primary inputs such
as resources, raw materials, other
materials for construction, energy, and
fuel. This could also include the
agricultural products required to prepare
food for the tourists.
Discussion:
• The primary inputs are then processed
further through manufacturing or
construction into intermediate (or
processed) inputs. The intermediate
inputs are nothing but the tourism
facilities such as gardens, parks,
museums, art galleries, shopping
centers, convention centers,
accommodations, restaurants, and gift
or souvenir shops. They facilitate and
support the tourism.
Discussion:

• The final outputs are nothing but the

personal experience the tourist takes
from availing services and by carrying out
various tourism-related activities. The
tourists utilize the intermediate outputs
(or services) to generate intangible but a
high value experience such as satisfaction,
recreation, and completion of a business
related task or maintaining a contact of
friends or relatives.
Steps of Tourism Product Development:

• Research the Market

• At this step, the tourism marketing

force conducts research on the current
market to identify the opportunities. In
includes economy, study of various
market segments and their varied
requirements, past market data, and
current market and tourism trends.
Steps of Tourism Product Development

• Match the Product with Market

• By assessing the market segments and

conditions for tourism, different
packages are created for various market
segments such that they can satisfy the
requirement of each segment of
individuals.
Steps of Tourism Product
Development
• Assess the Destination

• S i n c e d e st i n at i o n s fo r m t h e b a s i s o f p ro d u c t
development, the product development force visits
the prospective tourism destination to assess its
tourism potential and its ability to accommodate and
serve the tourists, features of the destination, and its
shortcomings. It is assessed to judge if the destination
is fulfilling the requirement of Accommodation,
Attractions, Activities, or Amenities. It is also checked
for the ease of Accessibility.
Steps of Tourism Product Development
• Understand the Stakeholder Role
• Tourism product development is the result of collaborative efforts of
various stakeholders. It involves identifying all the stakeholders in
private and public sectors, DMOs, Tourism and allied businesses, and
their respective roles in creating or developing a part of a tourism
product. The stakeholder meetings are conducted for creating a
project plan. The project goals are set to realize long-term vision,
medium-term action plans, and short-term progress assessments.

Steps of Tourism
Product Development
• Product Building

• At this step, the product is built using required

resources and consultations of the expertise to
create intermediate inputs (facilities and
amenities) and intermediate outputs (services).
It encompasses not only development of
destination infrastructure but also support for
special activities and experiences.
Steps of Tourism Product
Development
• Marketing & Promotion

• The functional and emotional benefits of the tourism at the

tourist destination are communicated to the market. The
marketing people create brochures, place advertisements
on the business portals, and contact media to promote the
destination and the product on the television and radio.
They also use various other marketing techniques to
increase the product visibility.
Steps of Tourism Product Development

• Providing Human and Technical Resource

• It includes providing skilled staff and contemporary technology to
cater the needs of tourists efficiently, to handle all tourism related
operations at the destination effectively, and to communicate with
the staff easily.

tourism business owner or supplier to
examine existing offerings (products and
services) in new and existing markets.
Market penetration occurs through price
concessions, improved promotion and
increased distribution channels,
acquisition of a rival in the same market,
or product differentiation.
Other important considerations in
determining product development
options

• Tourism marketing strategies

• Destination uniqueness and branding
• Tourism branding
• Competitor destinations
