Solutions Gold Intermediate Progress Test Unit 5C

The document summarizes the role of computers in enabling the United States to send astronauts to the moon in 1969. It notes that early computers were enormous in size, but that American scientists recognized smaller computers would be needed to carry equipment to the moon. This led to research into improving computer software to develop state-of-the-art but smaller computers for Apollo 11. These computers, though impressive for their small size at the time, had less power than modern mobile phones. They allowed Neil Armstrong to communicate with scientists on Earth and navigate the return trip home.

Reading

9 Read the text and choose the correct answers.

You may have learned about the first man on the moon in your history lessons at school. Neil
Armstrong must have felt amazing when he walked on the moon and took photos of it for the
first time in 1969. So how did the USA get him there?
People usually talk about the technology that allowed the Americans to build the Apollo 11
spaceship, but what about the computers that were inside it? Before the 1960s, computers
were very large. If you visit the Science Museum in London, you can see the Pegasus
Computer, the world’s oldest digital computer. Built in the 1950s, it was the size of a lorry.
It was powerful, but scientists must have known that it was impossible to carry a computer this
big to the moon. The Americans wanted to send a man into space before the Russians. To do
this, they realised that they needed powerful but much smaller computers.
American scientists started to research how to improve their computer software and it took a
lot of people and money to come up with the answer. When Apollo 11 finally went to the
moon, it had state-of-the-art computers. And when Neil Armstrong talked to scientists on the
Earth, and then left the moon to go back home, it was all with the help of these computers.
At the time, these were the most impressive and smallest computers ever made.
Despite being so small and impressive, these computers had less power than you probably
have on the mobile phone in your pocket. In fact, the most powerful phones today are more
than 1,000 times faster than Apollo 11’s computers.
The Apollo computers did a great job helping the spaceship fly to the moon and back, but they
could not do half the things that you can do on your mobile phone. With a mobile phone,
Armstrong could have downloaded films, streamed music and shared photos while he was on
the moon.
It is clear that the first journey to the moon really was amazing.

1 Why couldn’t the Pegasus Computer go to the moon?

A It was too big.
B It cost too much.
C It wasn’t powerful enough.
D It was in the Science Museum.
2 What did the Americans want to do?
A find a way to carry the Pegasus
B invent the mobile phone
C beat the Russians to the moon
D spend as little money as possible
3 What did the Americans need to do to get to the moon?
A make bigger computers
B train more scientists
C build more powerful rockets
D develop better software

Solutions Gold Intermediate Tests 5 Unit 5 Progress Test C

4 What did Apollo 11’s state-of-the-art computers allow Neil Armstrong to do?
A download films
B talk to scientists on the ground
C share photos while he was on the moon
D talk to his family at home
5 What is this article about?
A How Neil Armstrong felt when he walked on the moon.
B Different types of rocket that go to the moon.
C The history of computers.
D Russia putting a man on the moon.
