WHAT ARE
EQUATIONS
CHEMICAL EQUATION
a symbolic representation of a chemical
reaction, in which the reactants and the
products are expressed in terms of their
respective chemical formulae.

REACTANTS
Reactants are separated by plus
signs and are shown to the left

are separated by an arrow
Any conditions required for the reaction, such as a
particular temperature, may be given on the arrow.

product, e.g. CI2 (g) is chlorine gas, H2O(I) is water, H2O (g) is steam,
NaCI (aq) is aqueous sodium chloride.

BALANCING
CHEMICAL
EQUATIONS
When writing an
equation, it must balance
so that the total number
of atoms of each element
on each side of the arrow
is the same.

The law of conservation of matter says that in

chemical reactions, the total mass of the products
must equal the total mass of the reactants.

BALANCING
CHEMICAL
EQUATIONS
Write balanced equations including state symbols for the following reactions:

a) solid aluminium chloride + water forming aluminium hydroxide and hydrogen

chloride gas

b) calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid forming calcium chloride, carbon dioxide

and water.

c) aqueous lead(II) nitrate, Pb(NO3)2 + aqueous potassium iodide forming lead (II)
iodide, Pbl2 + potassium nitrate.

d) The reaction between calcium hydrogen carbonate and hydrochloric acid

(HCI(aq)) to form calcium chloride, carbon dioxide and water.

e) The formation of zinc oxide, nitrogen dioxide (NO,) gas and oxygen when solid
zinc nitrate is heated.
