Introduction:
JFET’s can be used in basic circuit configuration similar to bipolar transistor, i. e, common source,
common gate and common drain. To operate a JFET as a linear common source amplifier, the gate-
source reverse bias value must be chosen so that the diode junction does not become forward biased
by the applied signal. If the input circuit improperly designed, the gate may become forward biased,
causing gate current to flow. When this happens the high input impedance characteristics is lost. This
usually results in sever distortion in the output signal. For resistive loads, the gate bias value is chosen
to produce a drain current that results in half the supply voltage being dropped across the load resistor.
The application of JFET voltage amplifier are practically unlimited. Because JFET’s are semi-
conductor devices, but are voltage operated and high input impedance, they are compatible with both
vacuum tube and transistor circuits. JFET’s are also low noise devices. Two typical applications of a
JFET are as a pre-amplifier a high impedance microphone as a low noise amplifier. Voltage gain in
JFET amplifier without feedback is a function of load resistance RL and the trans conductance (gm) of
the transistor. Av = gm * RL. Transconductance is the ratio of a change in drain current 𝐼𝐷 to a change
in gate voltage Vg of a given value of drain source voltage VDS , transconductance,
Δ𝐼
gm = Δ𝑉𝐷 ( VDS constant ).

Discussion:
In this experiment common source JFET(self biased) voltage amplifiers have been dealt. Firstly we
measured the DC operating voltage Then we found that in a JFET voltage amplifier biased for linear
operation because we found that the drain voltage was approximately half the drain supply voltage.
After measuring this we calculated the Input and output voltage under applied signal also the voltage
gain of the amplifier. It's been verified that the gain increased significantly after connecting a bypass
capacitor across the source bias resistor to eliminate degenerative feedback. This is because the bypass
capacitor has been reduced the impedance of the circuit by allowing more current to flow through it than if the
bypass capacitor was not there. Finally the phase relationship between gate, drain and source voltages
have been measured. And we found 180 degree out of phase .
Conclusion :
After completing this lab, we have learnt about JFET along with Its working principle and how it
functions as voltage amplifier. We learned the significance of bypass capacitor and observed it’s effect
also. We also know about the importance of JFET as voltage amplifier. So, we can say that, the
objectives of this experiment has been fulfilled.
