Background

Copperas Cove Junior High School is a 6th-8th grade school in a rural town of 30,000.

There are 1000 students and 107 teachers including staff and office personnel. The

school has a reputation for being the bad school where the thugs go, and the admin is

trying really hard to change that perception.

Student Code of Conduct Values Statement

1. (Students are to dress according to the dress code,) no slippers, PJs, no

blankets, or hoodies. All these are huge problems that are daily enforced.

Students have to change into school gym clothes and are called home if out of

the dress code.

2. (No headband ears or tails), this was also a huge problem in years past.

Students would dress like animals and make animal noises in class.

3. (No added materials to outfits are allowed at all.) Students are supposed to wear

spaghetti straps and low-cut or short shirts. Female students that stomach is

showing have to cover up with a jacket or change together. Also, the holes in the

jeans, some of these jeans are completely open and only a sting is holding it

together. Skirts need to be knee length and no shorter than preventable with

shorts under but that is not enforced. Students are to keep their hands to

themselves, but there are a lot of couples that do more than hold hands in the

hallways. Teachers have to monitor the hallways between classes and report any

inappropriate behavior
4. (No cell phones), trying to keep a teenager from their phone is starting to look

like a losing battle. The principal wants a no-phone policy for students throughout

the whole day and throughout the whole building. In years past phones were

allowed before school, lunch, and after school, or even if the student was done

with all work as an award. Well going from that to no phones at all is a huge

battle. Not all teachers enforce it so students use that to their advantage. The

principals started saying if he walks into their classroom and a student is on their

phone the teacher is going o get the write-up.

Student Code of Conduct Topics

1. No personal sports balls are allowed on school property and have some in the

office that has to be returned or just for lunchtime.

2. Makeup tardies and absences. Tardies and absences the time would have to be

made up and not just get a write-up. If you miss an hour you have to make up

that hour

3. No facial paint or masks, students are still wearing masks it is hard to see their

faces or even understand them when they talk.

4. No blankets or pillows or stuffed animals at school. These are such big

distractions and students are so comfortable they just want to sleep in class.

5. No headphones due to not listening to instructions or emergency situations.

6. Strict guidelines and consequences for skipping class.

7. No bullying policy!
If I was a new principal at the school, the first thing I would do is update the code

of conduct. “A code of conduct is a set of values, rules, standards, and principles

outlining what employers expect from staff within an organization.” (2022) I would start

with banning headband ears and pinned tails. This is an increasing problem that

teenagers are beginning to pivot towards. Students dress like animals and make animal

noises in class. This is a huge distraction and causes fights among students. I would

also not allow added materials to outfits. Students are not supposed to wear spaghetti

straps or low-cut shirts. Female students that stomach is showing have to cover up with

a jacket or change altogether. Jeans with holes in them have to go. Some of these

jeans are completely open and only a sting is holding them together. Skirts need to be

knee-length.

The first period is when teachers check for dress code violations, and they send

students to the office. Students are to keep their hands to themselves, but there are a

lot of couples that do more than hold hands in the hallways. Teachers have to monitor

the hallways between classes and report any inappropriate behavior. I would not allow

more than one person out of a class at a time. Teachers are used to sending one boy

and one girl at a time but this causes problems. I would not allow any personal sports

balls at school. This has been a huge problem with students wanting to play ball in the

hallway, and they hit other students or staff members. I myself have been hit several

times with a stray ball down the hallway. I realize some students want to play ball after

lunch, but a few balls that can be checked out at the office would be fine.

I would not allow hoodies at all on school property. Students use these to put in

headphones or earbuds, and they are not listening to instructions which could be
dangerous in a crisis situation. There is a lot of roaming around in middle school.

Students do not want to be in class, so they find every way possible to skip class. I

would increase between-class period sweeps in the bathroom and hallways. I would

enforce a no-bullying policy and a no-tolerance policy for bullying. I can not stand a

student being mean to another. We all have to get along in this world. Everyone lives by

a set of rules set by society in order to avoid chaos, and it is the same for a school

setting. Students have to be taught to get along with each other. We have to have a set

of rules that help keep students safe and these rules need to be enforced.
