5s METHODOLOGY

-a productivity philosophy For business about eliminating waste, speeding up daily tasks, and
improving the quality of the workplace.
1) Shitsuke(Self-discipline) -involves extensive training for workers to perform their duties for
proper practices and policies in their workplace.
2) Seiri (sort) - process of identifying whether certain items are needed. Those that are not needed
are immediately removed to use space effectively.
3) Seiso (Sweep) - process of keeping everything in the workplace clean. Always keep equipment in
full working order so that it can be used anytime. 4) Seiton (systematize) - this is a process for
sorting toolsand parts in an order that Facilitates their use.
5) Seiketsu (standardize) - process of maintaining the Seiri, seiton and seiso conditions in an effort
to prevent every possible problem from occurring. It is also a process for keeping your workplace
clean by classifying everything and eliminating unnecessary items.

WELLNESS MASSAGE SERVICES AND PRODUCTS

1) ACUPRESSURE
-a method of maintaining health, treating disease and alleviating pain by applying pressure or
massaging certain points on the body surfaces.

2) SWEDISH MASSAGE (BASIC STRESS RELIEF MASSAGE) -the most widely used form of massage
for relaxation.

3) REFLEXOLOGY MASSAGE
-Science of body manipulation where in a positive response is affected and brings back the body to
normal by using thumb and Fingers.
-deals with the principle that there are replex areas in the Foot and hand that corresponds to all the
glands, organs and other parts of the body.

4) DEEP TISSUE
-releases the chronic patterns of tension in the body.
-uses slow strokes and deep pressure with the use of fingers, thumbs or elbows on contracted
areas.
5) STONE MASSAGE
-heated stones are used to enable the therapist to
work at a deeper level.

6) SPORTS MASSAGE
-utilized at pre-event, post-event, during training and to expedite rehabilitation after injury,
-involves compression and a variety of stretching techniques.

7) PREGNANCY MASSAGE
-can relieve fatigue, enhance sleep and calm an
active baby.
-depending on what stage you are pregnant, the therapist may utilize reflexology, Swedish massage
or very light shiatsu.

TYPES OF MASSAGE

1) RELAXATION / STRESS REDUCTION


-most common kind of massage.
-includes the types of treatments common in resorts, spas, private offices and client's homes; also
includes wellness massage or preventive health massage.
2) SPORTS MASSAGE
-athletic training massage, designed to help an athlete Prepare for competition and recover from
competing.
3) MEDICAL MASSAGE
-working by prescription, or in a hospital, or in a physical therapist's office; works with pathologies,
pain or recovery From injury.
4)CHIROPRACTIC ADJUNCT
-working in chiropractors offices, but some practitioners operate independently from the
chiropractor, with a cross-referral agreement.
5) TRANSFORMATIONAL OR PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC MASSAGE
-Focuses on the shifts in awareness and psychological insight that can be brought about with
massage.
6) PAMPERING
-type of treatment that might be found in some spas and hair salons.
7) CHAIR MASSAGE
-done with clothing on, client seated, location.

COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE HEALTHCARE

be enough to treat a particular health condition.

4 major domains of Complementary and Alternative Medicine

1. Biology-based practices-are taking herbal medicine and availing of special diets and vitamins
2. Energy medicine - uses magnetic fields or biofields in belief that energy fields may enter various
points in the body.
3. Manipulative and body - based practices-are bodily kinesthetic in nature and are concerned with
movement theraphy.
4. Mind-body medicine - uses mental exercises in belief that the brain is central to the health of an
individual.
Republic Act No.8423 or the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997- provisioned the
creation of the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Healthcare (PHITAHC)- the law-
making body with regards to the effective use of traditional and alternative medicines.

PHITAHC APPROVED ALTERNATIVE MODALITIES


Naturopathy - offers a wide range of natural practices including herbal medicine, acupuncture,
acupressure, nutritional theraphy and Ventosa cupping massage theraphy

Herbal medicine-there are 10 herbs that are proven and tested to have a medicinal value and
approved by the DOH

1. acapulko- for ringworm and other skin infections


2. ampalaya- for non-insulin dependent diabetic patients
3. bawang- for blood pressure control
4. bayabas- use as antiseptic to disinfect wounds, for mouthwash or tooth decay and gum infection
5. lagundi- for cough and asthma
6. Niyog-niyugan-for intestinal worms,particularly ascaris and trichina
7. Sambong-for urinary stones
8. Tsaang gubat-for mouthwash
9. Pansit-pansitan-for arthritis and gout
10. Yerba Buena- for relief from body aches and pains
Examples of Alternative Medicine
1. Acupuncture- is a form of energy medicine where long thin needles are inserted to specific parts
of the body to affect the energy flow.

2. Ventosa cupping massage theraphy is done by placing inverted glasses tha have flames from
burning cotton, on specific points in the body to relieve muscle and joint pains.
3. Reflexology-focuses on treating specific disorders through massaging of the soles of the feet.
4. Acupressure-uses hands to apply pressure on certain points of the body.
5. Nutrition theraphy-approaches treatment of a medical condition by providing a tailored diet for
the patient.

QUACTERY- a form of health fraud -is any advertisement, promotion, or sale of products and
services that have not been scientifically proven safe and effective
QUACK- is an individual that has title or no professional qualifications to practice medicine.
3 major characteristics of health quackery
1. It is a big business
2. It multiplies and spreads fast
3. It thrives on individuals who are diagnosed with illnesses that are known to have no cure.

3 FORMS OF QUACKERY
A. Medical quackery- includes cures, treatments and remedies of various health conditions that are
drugless or bloodless in nature.
B. Nutrition quackery- involves promotion of food fads and other nutritional practices that claim to
be all natural.
C. Device quackery- makes use of miraculous gadgets ( such as dials, gauges, electrodes, magnets
and blinkers) that are believed to cure certain health conditions.

When evaluating health information and products you must check for:
1.CREDIBILITY- this tells about the source and recency of the information.
– Who or what is the source of the information/product?
– Is the source qualified?
– Is the information updated?
2.CONTENT-this tells about the accuracy, disclaimer and completeness of information.
– Is it complete and correct?
– Does it have scientific basis?
– Does it state the limitations, purpose, scope, authority and currency of the information?
–Does it have labels that contain the directions for use and storage, expiration date and warnings?
3.Interactivity-this tells about the feedback mechanism and means of information exchange
between the source and the consumer.
– Can the consumer offer comments and suggestions?
– Is it possible to ask questions?

NATIONAL AGENCIES RELEVANT TO CONSUMER PROTECTION


A. Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD)
1. Serves as DOH key regulatory agency and implementer of the country's food control system
2. Ensures safe and good quality processed food, drug, and cosmetics
3. Regulates production, sale and traffic of food, drug, and cosmetics
4. Protects the health of the consumers and handles consumer complaints
CONSUMER WELFARE AND PROTECTION THE CUSTOMER ACT ORF THE
The Consumer Act of the Philippines is a law that protects the interest of the consumer, promotes
general welfare, and establishes standards of conduct for business and industry.
B. Department of Health (DOH)
1. Provides national policy direction and develops national plans, technical standards and guidelines
in health.
2. Regulates all health services and products.
3. Inspects establishments that dispense food.
4. Adopts measures to ensure the quality of meat, milk products, cosmetics, and other consumer
goods.

8 RIGHTS OF THE CONSUMERS


1. Right to safety - is the right to be protected against the marketing of goods and services, which
are hazardous to life and property.
2. Right to be informed - is the right to be protected against dishonest or misleading advertising or
labeling and the right to be given the facts and information needed to make an informed choice.
3. Right to choose - is the right to choose products at competitive prices with an assurance of
satisfactory quality.
4. Right to consumer education - is the right to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be an
informed costumer throughout life.
5. Right to basic needs - this right guarantees survival, adequate food, clothing, shelter, healthcare,
education, and sanitation.
6. Right to healthy environment - is the right to live in an environment that is neither threatening nor
dangerous and, which permits a life of dignity and well being.
7. Right to redress is the right to be compensated for misrepresentation, shoddy goods or
unsatisfactory services.
8. Right to representation - is the right to express consumer interests in the making and execution
of government policies.

International Organizations relevant to Consumer Protection


A. International Food Protection Institute (IFPI) ensures food protection through policies and
practices for a safer global food supply.
B. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) protects and promotes public health through control and
supervision of food safety.
C. World Health Organization (WHO) directs international health within the United Nation's System
and to lead partners and global health responses.
