Homework No.2 - RCI - Fall 2022

This document provides instructions for a homework assignment on reinforced concrete design. It includes two exercises involving the design and analysis of singly reinforced concrete sections under bending. For exercise 1, students are asked to determine the required area of tension reinforcement for various rectangular sections resisting a design moment of 300 kNm. They must also provide strain and stress diagrams. For exercise 2, students must determine the ultimate design moment for given reinforcement areas and section dimensions.

1. Exercise – Design of Singly Reinforced Rectangular Section

The response of the concrete material used for the construction of a

reinforced concrete member is given in Figure 1. The tensile response of the
steel reinforcement used in the aforementioned member is provided in Figure
2. The rectangular cross section of the reinforced concrete member is given in
Figure 3.

Figure 1. Compressive stress-strain response of concrete.

Figure 2. Stress-strain response of reinforcing steel.

Homework Assignment 2

Figure 3. Rectangular cross section of reinforced concrete member.

a) The ultimate design moment to be resisted by the section in Figure 3 is

equal to 300 kNm. Determine the area of the tension reinforcement, As,
required if b = 300 mm and d = 500mm.

b) For the same ultimate design moment to be resisted by the section in

Figure 3, i.e., Md = 300 kNm, determine the area of the tension
reinforcement, As, required if b = 250 mm and d = 500mm.

c) For the same ultimate design moment to be resisted by the section in

Figure 3, i.e., Md = 300 kNm, determine the area of the tension
reinforcement, As, required if b = 300 mm and d = 600mm.

d) If the steel reinforcement used in (a) has a characteristic yield strength,

fyk=600 N/mm2, and a modulus of elasticity, Es= 200 kN/mm2, determine
the area of the tension reinforcement, As, required for the section to be
able to resist the same ultimate design moment of 300 kNm. The
dimensions of the section are b = 300 mm and d = 500mm.

Important Note: For all cases provide schematic representations of the

corresponding strain [ε] and stress [σ] diagrams, showing:
i) The maximum compressive strain in concrete.
ii) The stresses in concrete assuming equivalent rectangular stress
block in compression.
iii) The strain developed in the steel reinforcement.
iv) The depth of the Neutral Axis.

Homework Assignment 2

2. Exercise – Analysis of Singly Reinforced Rectangular Section in

Bending

a) Determine the ultimate design moment to be resisted by the cross

section shown in Figure 3, if:
• Tension reinforcement, As = 1500 mm2
• fyk =500 N/mm2 and fck = 30 N/mm2.
• b = 250 mm and d = 500 mm.

b) Determine the ultimate design “balanced” moment to be resisted by the

“balanced” cross section shown in Figure 3, if:
• Tension reinforcement, As = 1500 mm2
• fyk =500 N/mm2 and fck = 30 N/mm2.
• b = 250 mm
