Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, and
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as
you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to
ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you
will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to
our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help
you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficult in answering the tasks in
this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
illustrate permutation of objects and solve problems involving permutations. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lesson is
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

Illustrating Permutation
Lesson
of Objects and Solving
1 Problems Involving
Permutation
In our daily life, we always count things. When we are dressing, we may count the
number of possible ways to choose a pair of pants, a shirt and a jacket from our
closet for an appropriate get-up.
In mathematics, the notion of permutation relates to the process of arranging all the
elements of a set into some sequence or order which only means that order is
significant. The PIN code is a good example when order is important. This lesson
discusses how permutations are applied in various situations.
What’s In
The concept of permutations arises naturally in many real-life situations and these
are useful in our daily lives. For example, the number of possible ways a certain task
5
or activity can be done, finding the distinct arrangements of objects, and filling up
positions in a specific organization are attributed to permutations.
The next activity will help you unlock the terms/concepts on permutations.
What’s New
1. In how many ways can Ramon choose his outfit? List all the possibilities.
2. How many pairs of shirt-pants-and-shoes are possible?
Guide Questions:
1. Were you able to list all the possibilities asked for?
2. What methods did you use in writing all the possibilities?
3. Can you think of a reason why is there a need to know the number of possible ways a
specific task can be completed?
6
What is It
Example 3. Given the 5-letter word COVID. In how many ways can we arrange its
letters, 4 at a time?
7
5∙ 4∙ 3 ∙ 2 = 120
Thus, there are 120 possible ways of arranging the 5 letters of COVID when we take
4 of them at a time. Also, we say the 5 letters of COVID taken 4 at a time, have 120
permutations.
Example 4. Find the number of distinct permutations of the letters of the word
ALCOHOL.
Solution: Assuming that the 7 letters of the word ALCOHOL are distinct, there are
P ( 7,7 )=7 ! Permutations. However, consider that 2 L’s are alike, and 2 O’s are also
alike. The permutation of the 2 L’s is P ( 2,2 )=2 !. The permutation of the 2 O’s is
P ( 2,2 )=2 !. To eliminate the duplicates, we divide 10! by 2! 2! since we are looking for
the distinct permutations. So,
7! 7 ∙ 6 ∙5 ∙ 4 ∙3 ∙ 2! 2,520
P= = = =1,260
2 ! 2! 2 ∙1 ∙ 2! 2
Therefore, there are 1,260 distinct permutations of the letters of the word ALCOHOL.
Circular Permutations
Example 6. In how many ways can 5 people be seated around a circular table?
P = (5 – 1)!
P=4 !=4 ∙3 ∙ 2∙ 1=24
8
Therefore, there are 24 ways 5 people can be seated around a circular table.
What’s More
The activities below were designed for independent practice to solidify your
