Lesson Plan 10

The document is a detailed lesson plan for a mathematics class on finding the area of irregular figures made up of squares and rectangles. It includes objectives, subject matter, materials, and a step-by-step procedure for the lesson. The procedure outlines teacher and student activities including an introduction, review, presentation, discussion, and generalization. Key points of the discussion include defining area, irregular figures, squares, rectangles, and the three step process of dividing an irregular figure into regular shapes, finding the area of each, and adding the areas together.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN MATHEMATICS 4
I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:

a. Explain how to divide the irregular shape to regular shapes.
b. Follow the step on finding areas of irregular figures made up of squares and
rectangles.
c. Make use of sq. cm and sq. m to find the area of irregular figures made up of
square and rectangles.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Area of irregular figures made up of squares and rectangles
Reference: https://teachershq.com/learners-materials-grade-four/
Materials: Laptop (power point presentation)
Manila paper
Values: Cooperating and helping each other.

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
• Prayer
- Let us all stand and pray, Mailey
kindly lead the prayer.
- O, Jesus. Please be with us as we start
our day at school today. Make this day
joyful and bless our friends, teachers,
and parents who care for us.
In Jesus, we pray.
Amen!
- Thank you, Mailey.

• Greetings
- Good morning Ma’am Rose!
- Good Morning class.
- Thank you Ma’am.
Please be seated.
- How are you today class?
• - We are fine ma’am
- Checking Attendance
- Is every one present today? I am
glad that no one is absent today - Yes ma’am, everyone is here today.

• Review
- Class yesterday we discuss about
what?
- Converting square centimeters to square
meters and vice versa.
-
- - A measurement of area equal to one
Very Good! centimeter length by one centimeter
What is square centimeter? width.

- - A measurement of area equal to one

meter length by one meter width.
Correct! How about square meters?

-
Very Good!
Again, the formula of converting
square centimeters
to square meter is,

m2 = cm2 10000

B. Lesson Proper Students start do the word search puzzle.

1. Motivation

-The teacher prepared a word search

puzzle related to the topic. We are done Ma’am
Okay class let’s play a game, word
search puzzle, find all the words or
things that squares and rectangles
shape.

2. Presentation
- Presentation of the Lesson (the teacher
present a power
point presentation)
3. Discussion
- Our topic for today is the area of
irregular figures made up of squares
and rectangles using sq. cm and sq.
m
- Reah, kindly read the meaning of
area

- Area can be defined as the space

occupied by a flat shape or the surface of
an object.
- Thank you Reah, also remember that
the area of a figure is the number of
unit squares that cover the surface of
a closed figure.
- So since our topic is finding the area
of irregular figures made up of
squares and rectangles using sq. cm
and sq. m.
Everyone please read. What is
Irregular figure?

-
Irregular Figure is a figure that is not a
standard geometric shape. It is area
cannot be calculated using any of the
- Thank you class, remember some standard areas formulas.
irregular figures are made up two or
more standard geometric shapes.
- In our lesson for today we will focus
on irregular figures made
up of squares and rectangles

- Zecky kindly read the meaning of

squares.

Squares is a regular quadrilateral, which

means that is has four equal angles.
- Thank you Zecky -
To find the area of a square we
can use this formula A= S2
or A= S x S
Example:
4m

Area of a square

A= S2
A= S x S
=4m x 4m ={4m}2

A= 16m2 A= 16m2
( The teacher will give another
Example)
Tyler kindly read the meaning of
rectangle
Rectangle a plane figure four straight
sides and four right angles especially
one with

- Thank you Tyler unequal adjacent sides in contrast to a
To find the area of a rectangle we square.
can use this formula A= L x W
Example:

5 m

length
7m
Area of a rectangle

A= L x W
=7mx5m
A= 35m2
(The teacher will give another
Example)

Area of an Irregular Figures

To find the area of an irregular

Figures, you can separate it Into
figures with areas you know how to
find.

Area (irregular)= Area of A +

Area of B + Area of C
4m 4m
8m

2m

A B C
Area of A Area of B
A= l x w
A= S x S
= 8m x 2m
= 4m x 4m
A = 16m2
A= 16m2
A= 16 sq. m
A= 16 sq. m
Area of C
A= 5 x 5 =
4m x 4m
A= 16m2

A= 16 sq. m
Area (Irregular)= 16m2 + 16cm2 +
16m2= 48m2 or 48 sq. m

Another Example:
4cm 4cm

8cm 6cm

A B
C
Area of A Area of B
A= l x w A= S X S
= 8cm x = 6cm x 6
4cm A= cm
32cm2 A = 36cm2
A= 32 sq. cm A= 36 sq. cm

Area of C
A= l x w
= 8cm x 4 cm
A= 32 cm2

A= 32 sq. cm

Area (Irregular)= 32 cm2 + 36cm2 +

32 cm2 = 100 cm2 or 100 sq. cm

Again class there are three steps in finding

the area of an irregular figure. First, Divide
irregular figure to regular shapes.
Second, find the area of each shapes.
Third or the last step, add all the answer.
And that’s it, in that three steps you can find
the area of an irregular figure.
4. Generalization

It can be defined as the space

occupied by a first shape or the
surface of an object.
Area
Very good!

Again Class, what is the formula in

finding the area of a rectangle?

A= L x W
Correct! How about the formula of
area of a square?

A= S2
Very Good!
A= S x S
What is the formula in finding the
area of an irregular figure?

Area (Irregular)= Area of A + Area of B

Very Good Class!
+ Area of C
5. Fixing Skills

Now we will have a group activity

I will group you into two. First
group is the square group and the
second group is the rectangle group.
This group activity entitled “Find
my Area”. Each group I will give an
envelope, each envelope has three
irregular figure. For Square group
you will find all the square and then
find their area.
Also in the rectangle group you will
find the rectangle and the find their
area.
I’ll give you 10 minutes to do the 6cm
task.
Is it clear? Yes Ma’am 4cm

Okay you may start, timer start now!
