Camelbacks were steam locomotives that had their
cabs at the middle of the boiler instead of the back. While
many railroads had Camelbacks, it is the New Jersey
Central that is probably best known for running them. For
decades, Camelbacks pulled freight trains and even the NEW
famous Blue Comet passenger train along New Jersey's
Rails. When it comes to identifying steam locomotives,
most people start counting wheels, but when railfans see
a Camelback, they know right away what they are looking at.

The End of the Steam Era

In 1946, EMD began production of one of the most
famous and recognizable locomotives of all time, the F-3
diesel. Proclaimed as the "widest range locomotive in
history", a record production of 1800 units sold in just two

switcher proved to be one of the most popular
switch engines ever manufactured. Constructed
over a 10-year period between 1939 and 1949,

RDC Budd Car Set RDC Budd Car Set
Even in the heyday of passenger railroading, it was
still quite expensive for trains to serve passengers on
small branch lines and secondary mainlines. The solu-
tion to high-cost, low ridership routes was the RDC.

RDC’s or “Budd” cars as they were commonly NEW

known, were essentially a cross between a locomotive
and a passenger car. The diesel motors were placed
beneath the car frame and the exhausts, radiators and
air intakes were mounted in a top section above the
roof that resembled a vista dome found on streamlined
passenger cars. This arrangement kept the equipment
out of the way and allowed for more passenger room,
multiple unit capability and bi-directional operation flex-
ibility. A testament to their excellent design, RDC’s Baltimore & Ohio RDC Budd Car Set
were common on U.S. railroads for over 30 years. Item No. 30-2144

Spanning a career of over 20 years, EP-5 "Jets" were the
prize of the New Haven Railroad. While they always ran in
the shadow of the Pennsy's GG-1, EP-5's outperformed their NEW
electric counterparts in many ways. With its unparalleled

MTH is proud to reintroduce a new gen-
eration of standard gauge lovers to the
classic looks of the 500 series freight
car. While slightly smaller than 200
series cars, the 500’s carry the same
beauty and level of trim detail. Like their
200 series brethren, the 500 series cars
are constructed entirely of stamped metal
components. Each car features black
oxide finished trucks, nickel truck journal
boxes and sprung latch couplers for that
authentic look and feel of yesteryear.
Equally at home behind the MTH 392E,
400E, 381E or any other large standard
gauge locomotive, these stunningly
attractive freight cars add color and vari-

Named for the first number of their type, the “418” Cars were sized to match middle-sized standard gauge locomotives. Although approximately three inches shorter than the
larger “State Cars”, the “418” Cars offered much of the same detail and all of the quality of their larger brethren.

MTH is proud to offer for 1999 the specialized set of 418 Cars decorated to match the venerable #9E. Each set includes the #428 Coach, #429 Coach/Baggage Combine and
#430 Observation car. As an added bonus, MTH has included to this set the rare #431 Diner - complete with dining chairs and tables in their original decorative schemes.
