Eastern Polytechnic, Port Harcourt.

Second Semester Examination 2021/2022 Session

Department: Electrical/Electronics Engineering. Course Code: EEC249.
Course Title: Circuit Theory 2. Level: National Diploma 2 (ND2). Time allowed. 11/2Hours
Instructions: Answer four questions in all.

1. A 20Ω resistor, a 100 F capacitor and an inductor of 0.15H are connected in series to a
supply at 230V, 50Hz. Calculate the power consumed by the circuit.
2. Define power factor and explain the factors affecting it’s value.
3. A resistor of 50Ω is connected in parallel with a 67.6mH inductor, the combination being
supplied by a 120V, 50Hz supply. Calculate (a) the power factor (b) the active power (c) the
apparent power (d) the reactive volt-amperes consumed.
4. Define poly phase and differentiate between the single phase and three phases system.
5. a) State three differences between star connected and delta connected three phase system. b)
The current in the primary winding of a pair of mutually coupled coil is 5A, and the primary
flux of 6mWb links with the secondary winding. If the secondary winding has 950turns and
the primary winding current is reduced to zero in 4ms, determine: (i) the average value of
the e.m.f induced in the secondary winding (ii) the mutual inductance between the two coils
6. The impedance per phase of a delta connected load is 10 Ω per phase, the line voltage being
230V. Determine (a) the phase current (b) the line current (c) the apparent power of the
load.
