What is percentage?

 We encounter percentages all the time, in the news, when we go shopping, and our
test results at school.

 To show that the number we are using is a percentage, we use the symbol .

 When we say “percent” we are really saying “per 100”

 1 percent (1%) means “1 per 100” or “1 out of 100”

 Percentages are fractions of 100

What is percentage?
Percentages are just another way to express a fraction or decimal quantity but using
percentages makes it easier to compare different quantities.

 When using percentages, 100% describes all of something. If 100% of the seats were
filled at the cinema, then all of the seats were filled. If you achieve 100% on your
maths test, then you get all the questions right.

 A percentage that is less than 100% indicates that we are talking about less than
everything.

 If 86% of the students are at school today, this means that 14% of the students are
absent [100% - 86% = 14%]

 If you get 70% of the questions correct on your maths test, then 30% are incorrect
[100% - 70% = 30%].
100%
 If we talk about a percentage that is greater than 100 then we are saying that we have
more than expected or more than we started with.

 If the price of bananas is 115% of what is was last week then the price has gone up
15%.
