Percentage Basics (Details)
We encounter percentages all the time, in the news, when we go shopping, and our
test results at school.
To show that the number we are using is a percentage, we use the symbol .

100%
When using percentages, 100% describes all of something. If 100% of the seats were
filled at the cinema, then all of the seats were filled. If you achieve 100% on your
maths test, then you get all the questions right.
A percentage that is less than 100% indicates that we are talking about less than
everything.
If 86% of the students are at school today, this means that 14% of the students are
absent [100% - 86% = 14%]
If you get 70% of the questions correct on your maths test, then 30% are incorrect
[100% - 70% = 30%].
100%
If we talk about a percentage that is greater than 100 then we are saying that we have
more than expected or more than we started with.
If the price of bananas is 115% of what is was last week then the price has gone up
15%.
