At the end of the lesson with the aid of visual aids, the students of Grade 7 – St. Mark will be able to:

A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of: pre-colonial Philippine literature as a means of connecting to the past; various
reading styles; ways of determining word meaning; the sounds of English and the prosodic features of speech; and correct
subject-verb agreement.
B. Performance Standards The learner transfers learning by: showing appreciation for the literature of the past; comprehending texts using appropriate
reading styles; participating in conversations using appropriate context-dependent expressions; producing English sounds
correctly and using the prosodic features of speech effectively in various situations; and observing correct subject-verb
agreement.

Types of reading can be used for absorbing varying amounts of information. They all have their pros and cons, so it’s
essential to know when and how to use each type.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to get to know your reading ability:
1. Do you jot down any feelings or thoughts while you’re reading?

Skimming
This technique helps you pull specific information out of a text instead of just getting a general idea. A way to skim a text for
specific information is to scan the document for a key-word and only read the parts surrounding that key-word.
Examples: NEWS PAPER, MAGAZINE, BUSINESS AND TRAVEL BROCHURES

Scanning
Scanning is used to get an overview of any given text. You’re looking at the text as a whole. Focusing on the shape, the
subject of each section, you are getting a general idea of the topics that are addressed within the body of the text.
Examples: A GOOGLE SEARCH LIST ON THE INTERNET, A BUS/AIRPLANE SCHEDULE, A CONFERENCE GUIDE
D. Discussing new concepts The teacher will divide the class into 4 groups (depending on the attendance).
