Post-Task Activity
1. After learning the importance of digital technology in the practice of other allied
health members during this critical time, what do you think can community health
nurses do to reach out for their client/s in times of the pandemic?
When the pandemic started and the number of patients with COVID-19 was
continuously rising, all of us were ordered to stay at home and to avoid going to public
places—including the hospitals and other health care services providers. In reaching out
with our special loved ones and friends, the advancements brought by digital technology
has undeniably helped us despite the fact that all of us are on a lockdown. Moreover, this
modernity has also played and is still portraying such a big role in the life of our
healthcare workers, including our nurses, and the patients they are providing care of with
the help of our telemedicine systems. However, these kinds of systems are far from being
helpful if the services they provide do not satisfy the people or the community’s goal of
attaining good health and well-being. Hence, in order to consistently and effectively meet
the clientele’s needs of care, it is crucial for community health nurses to ensure the
community’s accessibility to the aforementioned digital technology which would help
both the nurse and patient to remain safe from the risk of obtaining the coronavirus.
Along with this is the community health nurses’ responsibility of providing
comprehensive health and patient education since this ensures that the needed care is
being provided by the patients themselves, even at the comfort of their homes, which
helps them engage with their capability of having self-care. The community health nurse
should also promote and address the needs for further advancement of the said
telemedicine system since the community’s goal and needs are ever-evolving. Moreover,
community health nurses should portray their role as patient advocates and become the
voice of their patients who are not fortunate enough to have access and acquire the
needed services.
Community Health Nursing became even more essential during the pandemic for
this is the time when the people needed the community health nurses’ aid and services
more. As someone who recognizes that our country’s healthcare system is far from being
great, I have observed that it is a lot safer to be treated at home rather than at the hospital
since the rising number of COVID combined with non-COVID patients brings our
healthcare institutions to be overcrowded—making it a lot more harmful for the patients.
It is also observable how accommodating it is to have our covid vaccines at the dedicated
vaccination sites, which are usually located near our places, instead of having them at the
hospitals which are commonly always full. The pandemic made a lot of Filipinos become
unemployed which unfortunately is one of the sole reasons why Community Health
Nursing became even more essential since there are a lot of families who could not afford
to admit themselves to the hospitals. Hence, this kind of problems relating to
socioeconomic differences which emerged during the pandemic has been addressed due
to the service provided by this field.
