of the book, the publisher, the publication, and lastly the
location of the source if there is.

Okay, very well said.

3. Motivation
Now, I have here a cited information. Observe as to how
it was cited.

The cited information:

Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous
overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).

Alright, very good. And how is the source written? Yes, - Only the name and the page number is included.

previous discussion about citing sources? Yes, Jimilyn? enclosed in a parenthesis with an author’s name and
page number only. Meanwhile, the previously discussed
format contains more information about the source.
Yes, very good. All your ideas are actually correct and
that brings us to our next discussion.

1. Presentation of the Lesson

Our topic for today is about Basic MLA in-text citation
rules.
And your task for today is to…. Everybody please read. - Apply the basic rules in MLA in-text citation.

Okay.
The paragraph or the cited information I showed you
earlier is an example of an in-text MLA citation. Here it
is.

2. Activity
Now, let’s have an activity. I have here an information
from an article. Now, your task is to make an MLA in-
text citation out of it. Let’s do this by group. Write your
answer on any piece of paper. Work quietly.

Article:
Factors affecting health of elderly people
Patrick Ritz
Public Health Nutrition, p. 561, 2001.

The reduced fat-free mass is responsible for a low

resting metabolic rate.

Clear, class? - Yes, ma’am.

You have 3 minutes for this activity.

(After 3 minutes) Are you done? - Yes, ma’am.

Alright, who would like to share their work? Yes, (Angela writes her answer on the board) In the study
Angela? You may write your answer on the board. about health of the elderly people, it states that “The
reduced fat-free mass is responsible for a low resting
metabolic rate” (Ritz 561).

C. Analysis
Now, everybody eyes on the board.
What can you say, is it correct? - Yes, ma’am.

How did you say so? - The source is enclosed in a parenthesis. It includes the
author’s name and the page number.

Yes, that is correct. What else have you observed? How - it is cited word for word, ma’am.
is the information cited? Is it cited word for word,
paraphrased or interpreted? Yes, Jaspher?

Alright. And what did she do? Did she add quotation - Yes, ma’am.
mark?

Okay, very good. When the information is cited word

for word, then it should be enclosed in a quotation mark.

Is that right, class? - Yes, ma’am.

D. Abstraction
Everyone, eyes on the board. Please read the first bullet, - In MLA style, referring to the works of others in your
Lyka. text is done using parenthetical citation.

Yes, thank you. Let’s take a look at the example on the

board. In the citation, the source was cited through
writing the author’s name and the page number.
Correct? - Yes, ma’am.

Next, please read, Alexander. - This method involves relevant source information in
parentheses whenever a sentence uses a quotation or
paraphrase.

What does it mean? When you are just paraphrasing a

text or copying it, it means that it is from your own.
Right? - Yes, ma’am.

Alright. So, that’s when in-text citation comes in. clear? - Yes, ma’am.

Okay. Now, what if you want to cite the text in different

way? How should you cite the source?

The author’s name may appear either in the sentence

itself or in parenthesis following the quotation or
paraphrase, but the page number(s) should always
appear in the parenthesis, not in the text of your
sentence.

Example:
1.
Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by
a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263).

2.
Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotion in
the creative process (263).

3.
Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous
overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).

What can you observe in the examples? How do they - In the first and second example, the author’s name is
differ from each other? Yes, Monica? written in the sentence itself. Whereas in the third
example, the author’s name was written inside the
parenthesis with the page number.

Okay, very good. How about the others, can you follow? - Yes, ma’am.

When you are including the author’s name in the

sentence, there is no need to write it inside the
parenthesis, only the page number. Both are saying that
the information can be located on page 263 of a work by
an author named Wordsworth.
Clear? - Yes, ma’am.

Any question? - None, ma’am.

group 2, group 3, and this side here is group 4. Let’s
