EXPERIMENT-20

 AIM: To detect the presence of acidic and basic

radical in the given compound.
 MATERIALS REQUIRED: Test tubes, test tube
stands, burner, glass rod, test tube holder, dil. H2SO4,conc.H2SO4,
copper chips , ferrous sulphate , ammonium acetate , potassium iodide ,
potassium chromate.

 PROCEDURE:

Test for acidic radical:

EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

To the original No observation Dilute group is

solution add dil. absent.
H2SO4.

To the salt add Reddish brown gas NO3- [nitrate] may be

conc. H2SO4 and a small with pungent smell present.
paper ball and heat. comes out.

Copper Chips test: To the Dark brown fumes NO3- [nitrate] is confirmed.
salt add of nitrogen dioxide
conc. H2SO4 and few copper are formed.
chips, heat the test tube.

Ring test: Add a Dark brown ring is formed at NO3- [nitrate] is confirmed.
small quantity of the junction of the layers of
freshly prepared the acid and the solution.
solution of ferrous
sulphate to a part
of the aqueous
solution of a salt
and add conc. H2SO4 slowly
along the sides of
the testube.
Test for basic radical:

EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

To the salt add NaOH No pungent ammoniacal 0 group is absent.
solution and warm. smell.

To the original solution of White ppt is formed. Pb2+ may be present.

salt, add dil. HCl.

Boil the white ppt with

5-10ml of water and
divide the solution in 2
parts..
Potassium Iodide Yellow ppt. Lead is confirmed.
test: To the first part of
ppt add KI solution.

Potassium Yellow ppt. Lead is confirmed.

chromate: dissolve
the ppt in hot
ammonium acetate
and KCrO4 solution to it.

 RESULT:
Acidic Radical: Nitrate (NO3-)
Basic Radical: Lead (Pb2+)

 PRECAUTIONS:
 Handle reagents carefully.
 Wash the test tube after chemical reaction.
 Don’t use broken glass ware.

WITH PENCIL ON FIRST BLANK PAGE:

Copper chips test:
2KNO3 + H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2HNO3

4HNO3 + Cu → Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO2 + 2H2O

(Reddish Brown)

Ring test:
KNO3 + H2SO4 → KHSO4 + HNO3

6FeSO4 + 3H2SO4+ 2HNO3 → 3Fe2(SO4)3 + 4H2O + 2NO

FeSO4 + NO + 5H2O → [Fe(NO)(H2O)5]SO4

(Brown Ring)
WITH PENCIL ON SECOND BLANK PAGE:
Reactions involved in group 1 analysis:

Pb(NO3)2 + 2HCl → PbCl2 + 2HNO3

(white ppt)

Potassium Iodide test:

PbCl2 + 2KI → PbI2 + 2KCl

(yellow ppt)

Potassium Chromate test:

PbCl2 + K2CrO4 → PbCrO4 + 2KCl

(yellow ppt)
