• A 1 m2, 15%-efficient module (at STC conditions) is connected to an

inverter with 90%-efficiency. The NOCT of the module is 45 C and its

maximum power degrades by 0.5%/ C above the 25C STC.
• What is the STC rated power of the module?
• For a day with 6 kWh/m2 of insolation, find the energy output of the inverter
(kWh) if the module operates all the day at its NOCT temperature (solar cell
temperature is 45 C). Assume the only deratings are due to temperature and
inverter efficiency.
• Answer: 150W
• Answer: 0.729 kWh
The following specific conditions and values are given for the example:
• Analysis period: 1 year
• Measured average solar irradiation intensity in 1 year: 120 kWh/m2
• Generator area of the PV plant: 10 m2
• Efficiency factor of the PV modules: 15 %
• Electrical energy actually exported by plant to grid: 110 kWh

Determine the performance ratio of the plant?

61 %
• It is aimed to design a grid-connected PV system to deliver annual
energy of 4000 kWh at the AC side of the inverter. It is found that the
average daily irradiation on the PV array is characterized by 5.5
kWh/m2 . Answer the following questions:
• Question 24: Find the required kWp of the PV system assuming that
the performance ratio of the system is 72%.
• Answer: 2.77 kWp
• Question 25: Determine the required overall Area of the modules
with 18%-efficiency?
• Answer: 15.4 m2
• You have to design a grid-tied PV system, which consists of a PV
module mounted on the rooftop of a house and grid-tied inverter.
The inverter is located inside the house, at a distance of 10m from the
PV module.
You have decided:
• To use copper cables for the connections (ρCu=1.7 x 10−8 Ω.m).
• To keep the losses in the cables below 2% when the panel is generating the
maximum power (Vmpp=40 V, Impp=9 A).
• What is the minimum cross sectional area (of copper) of the cables?
Give the answer in [mm2] and with one decimal place.

Answer: 3.825
• A grid-connected PV array consisting of sixteen 150W modules can be arranged in
a number of series and parallel combinations. The array delivers power to a 2500-
W inverter. The key characteristics of modules and inverter are given in the Table.
• The low design temperature is −20ºC and the Voc temperature correction
factor for your PV is −0.34%/ºC. The characteristics of your module are Isc
= 8A, Voc = 37V and Vmp = 29V. How many modules can you put in series
for an inverter that cannot go over 500V?
• Answer: 11

• If Voc = 22V, Vmp = 18V, hot PV cell temp = 50°C, inverter operating voltage
range = 250V to 600V, temp coefficient of voltage = −0.38%/°C. What is the
least amount of modules that should be connected in series?
