Task 1 - Part 1
Task 1 - Part 1
Task 1 - Part 1
What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used and how can you employ a broader
range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in Module 3?
For my work so far, I have mostly made sculptures/physical works using a range of
different materials. For example, I used cardboard, wooden sticks, wire, and hot glue for
my box project and coloured card, fishing wire, tape, permanent markers, and thin coloured
paper for my book project, however, in my personal project I mainly focused on
photography and videography. Individually, these materials and processes are fitting for
their respective projects and the concepts I wanted to convey Similarly, I want to use a
unique medium most suited for this new project to convey my ideas most effectively. This
means anything is on the table, however because of the limited time, I would prefer to
work with a process/material I am familiar with and so digital illustration, watercolour, ink,
and traditionally illustrative mediums are likely most appropriate for this project.
Edit:
As I will be printing the piece, I will also need to use the campus printing lab to print the
final work.
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work.
What does it communicate and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the
viewer/customer/client and their lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can you market
your work?
I think I want this piece/project to encourage the viewer to look at things, people, or/and
the world through a conceptual, creative, and unconventional lens. I think people auto-
piolet themselves through life and I too am guilty of this. Recently I have discovered the
joy of slowing down and appreciating where you are and what’s around you in the present,
instead of allowing our obsession with what has been, and will be to time travel us through
the joys and opportunities in our day to day lives. I don’t necessarily want my piece to
revolve around the theme of the everyday happiness we are missing, but instead about
slowing down and observing the world around you in different ways to escape the daunting
feeling of time passing at an incredible speed.
Edit:
After revisiting my themes, I have decided I want to instead communicate how
manipulative advertisements and media can convince us that we can solve our issues and
reach fulfilment through buying their products. I want to show how this often leads to
people filling the gaps in their lives with possessions instead of addressing and solving
their issues.
Question 3
We make, design, and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.
What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of
designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to question? Is your work ironic,
playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience
on viewing your work - how do you want them to react? What is an ideal response?
I want to get the viewers of my work to change their mindset to have a more curious,
creative, happy, and appreciative approach to life. I want to convince the viewer that
everyone has a life worth living and if you have the right attitude, every moment on this
earth, even the bad ones are beautiful gifts. I want to share my belief that life is what you
make of it; yes, we all have different circumstances that impact our happiness and
behaviours, but with the right attitude, every dark moment is only a step in your journey for
brightness and the former should be valued just as much as the latter. I want to get my
viewers to do this by encouraging playful and positive thinking through observation and
creativity while also being critical, careful, and curious about the information we are given
to prevent one’s opinions and emotions being swayed/controlled by biased information that
means only to persuade one for its own agenda.
Edit:
While much of the above still applies, I want the viewers to think carefully about the
solutions to their problems. I don’t want to demonise retail therapy as enjoyment of any
kind can be rewarding and helpful, but at the same time, I hope the piece inspires viewers
to always pursue a happiness that is not reliant on material things. I hope it inspires viewers
to chase true fulfilment every day.
Task 1 – Part 1
I was watching a video on Milton Keynes and the history/purpose of its brutalist
architecture and car-based infrastructure. In this video, it defined the philosophy of
brutalism as “Form follows function”. I found this philosophy interesting and initially I
wanted to explore what it would look like if I applied this philosophy to things other than
architecture. After finding that the majority of things already have forms that were
designed with the function in mind. Of course, the forms of things are representative of
their functions to different extents, however I found this concept a little limiting and
flat/boring.
Still interested in Milton Keynes and its unique infrastructure and architecture, I
investigated into other aspects of the city to discover a new direction to explore. In the
video I watched, it discussed that the highly efficient road systems caused the population to
commute mostly by car. Because of this, few people walk or use the communal areas, and
because Milton Keynes is relatively large, if you walk through the city, you get the surreal
feeling of walking through a simultaneously empty and full city. This is because the streets
are void of people walking, chatting, and going through their day to day lives, however at
the same time, you always get the feeling there are people around as you see cars drive by
frequently. The brutalist architecture of the city only adds to this surreal and unsettling
feeling. This got me interested in exploring surreal environments, liminal spaces, fabricated
familiarity, and unsettling visuals.
I have always loved the concept of liminal spaces, places that seem familiar but aren’t; it
reminds me that we all have similar childhoods and stories. I want to explore how the
profit-driven systems/methods used in advertising, architecture, and in other aspects of
society create an international uniformity that we all subconsciously interpret as familiar or
nostalgic. To do this I want to investigate the concepts of modularity in architecture (the
systematic use of materials) as well as the modularity of people (how people’s interests and
desires are the consequence of the media they are fed and the environments they live in).
This investigation would also include the concepts of consumerism, fulfilment, and
conformity.
Edit:
I really liked the idea of fulfilment, consumerism, conformity/uniformity, and modularity.
The fabricated social vibrancy seen in early advertisements of Milton Keynes, as well as
Milton Keynes being a city that was designed and built in the space of a few years, instead
of a traditional city that grows and evolves slowly, has inspired me to explore misleading
advertisements and profit driven agendas in society. This fake fulfilment seen in the city’s
advertisements has also inspired me to explore liminal and unsettling spaces to reflect the
strange feeling of commuting by foot in the city.
To represent these concepts, I will likely illustrate the piece digitally, this is because the
project revolves around the themes of society, consumerism, advertising, and media and so
I think the digital medium will be most fitting considering we live in the digital age. I am
also quite comfortable with this process and the tools available through the digital medium
will allow me to be highly efficient and flexible. I will likely do the sketch traditionally on
large paper using pencil as I am more comfortable sketching this way. I will then likely
scan the sketch so I can work on it digitally. I will use the Clip Studio Paint Pro software
and my drawing tablet to continue the work. Finally, I will print the piece out in a large
scale using the print lab on campus.
Edit:
I had the idea of a modular/doll-like person with a missing arm shopping for a new arm,
but instead, the attractive and manipulative/hypnotic advertisements from a leg shop leads
the doll to buy a leg instead which he doesn’t need. This idea is to reflect how
advertisements often convince us their products will solve our problems, or invent new
problems for us to fix, when really you are being distracted from addressing your true
problems. After discussing the idea with my tutor and course mates, it was suggested that
the story was too complex to be communicated in one illustration. This is where the idea
for a short comic strip arose.
The plan is to design and sketch the comic strips on paper, scan them in and finish
digitally, then print the panels out in the campus printing lab.
What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?
I will need to get comfortable with scanning traditional images to digitalise them and will
also have to learn about print types, as well as communicating the timing of the prints with
the deadline. I will also have to improve my digital rendering skills, storytelling
composition, comic making, and colour communication.
What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation,
understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and
influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone here?
I will look at many examples from different artists for each aspect of the comic. This
includes, colour use, composition, panel layout, print paper, character design, background
design, speech bubble design, and more. I will push myself beyond my comfort zone by
finishing each panel to a professional level in time for the deadline. Time management and
finishing projects in general are weaknesses of mine.
Task 1 – Part 2
This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will
help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a quality artefact for the
exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without
good, pragmatic planning. Remember, gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and
supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work.
You must factor this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item
may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which can
improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps
must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access
and co-ordinate your making with availability?
Paper and mark making I have my own paper and I usually work small and slow, but I
tools tools will push myself to work big and fast
to create more ideas of better quality.
Drawing program I have my own drawing I will have to use my experience with
program the program and my experience with
my own art making processes.
Sustainability
Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste,
and environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and reduce your impact? If you
can’t manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint? How will you plan
for the end of life of your object/s, how will you remove it from the studio at the end of the
exhibition and how will you recycle and dispose of it? What is the recycling / disposal protocol for
the materials you are using? How is this affected once you combine materials together?
Because the work is digital, this is not a huge concern, however, I will ensure that
communicate clearly with the print lab to reduce the likelihood of reprints that waste
materials. I also want to make the piece so good that I keep it instead of throwing it away. I
hope I succeed.
Task 1 – Part 2
Project Budget
Please list below any cost or expenditure associated with your project. The aim here is to identify
the actual cost of the work you have made, rather than the projected cost of a proposed
outcome. You do not need to list those materials that are freely available in the studios
(paper/pencils/acrylic paint etc) but do include more specific materials such as fabric, wood,
superglue, neoprene etc. You can add to this list as you progress through the project.
