Vocabulary Word#3 - Memoracion

The document defines key terms used in Cartesian coordinate systems and graphing: 1) It defines a Cartesian plane as a coordinate system that specifies each point with a pair of numerical coordinates representing distances from two perpendicular axes. 2) An axis is a reference line used to measure or rotate a curve or figure. 3) Coordinates locate a specific point on a grid as two numbers or a letter and number, with order being important to distinguish points. 4) Key terms like abscissa, ordinate, x-axis, y-axis, ordered pairs, quadrants, intercepts, and descriptors like horizontal, vertical and linear are defined in relation to the graphing of lines and curves

VOCABULARY WORDS #3

1. Cartesian plane
- A Cartesian coordinate system in a plane is a coordinate system that speci es each point
uniquely by a pair of numerical coordinates, which are the signed distances to the point from
two xed perpendicular oriented lines, measured in the same unit of length.

2. Axis

- An axis is a line with respect to which a curve or gure is drawn, measured, rotated, etc.An
axis is a line with respect to which a curve or gure is drawn, measured, rotated, etc.

3. Coordinate

- Coordinates are two numbers (Cartesian coordinates), or sometimes a letter and a number,
that locate a speci c point on a grid, known as a coordinate plane.

4. Abscissa

- The x -coordinate, the distance from a point to the vertical or y -axis measured parallel to the
horizontal or x -axis.

5. Ordinate

- The y-coordinate of a point: its distance from the x-axis measured parallel to the y-axis.

6. Y-axis
- A y-axis is the line on a graph that is drawn from bottom to top. This axis is parallel to which
coordinates are measured.

7. X-axis
- The x-axis is the horizontal plane of a graph in a Cartesian coordinate system, which
gives a numerical value to each point along the horizontal x-axis.

8. Ordered pair
- An ordered pair is a pair of numbers in a speci c order. For example, (1, 2) and (- 4, 12)
are ordered pairs. The order of the two numbers is important: (1, 2) is not equivalent to (2, 1)
-- (1, 2)≠(2, 1).

9. Quadrants
- A quadrant is the area contained by the x and y axes; thus, there are four quadrants in a
graph.

10. Intercept

- An intercept is a point where the straight line or a curve intersects the y-axis in a plane. It is
also said to be a y-intercept.

11. X-intercept
- The x-intercept is where a line crosses the x-axis, and the y-intercept is the point where
the line crosses the y-axis.

12. Y-intercept
- y-intercepts are when the line touches the y-axis. To nd these, nd the y when x = 0.

13. Horizontal

- In coordinate geometry, a line is said to be horizontal if two points on the line have the same
Y- coordinate points. It comes from the term “horizon”.

14. Vertical
- vertical line is one which runs from up and down the page.

15. Linear

- A linear equation is an algebraic equation where each term has an exponent of 1 and when
this equation is graphed, it always results in a straight line.
