THE EVOLUTION OF TRADITIONAL TO NEW MEDIA

Media defined as means of communication including newspapers, radio and internet.

PRE-INDUSTRIAL AGE (BEFORE 1700)

 People discovered fire, developed paper from plants, and forged weapons and tools with
stone, bronze copper and iron.

Example forms of media:

 Cave Paintings (also known as “parietal arts) are numerous paintings and engravings
found on cave walls or ceilings around 38,000 BCE.
 Papyrus is made from pith of papyrus plant. It is used in ancient times as writing surface
to designate documents written on its sheets, rolled up to scrolls.
 Acta Diurna: (Latin: Daily acts sometimes translated as daily public records) were daily
roman official notices, a sort of daily gazette.
They were carved on stone or metal and presented in message boards in public places like
the forum or Rome.
 Codex in the mayan region (15th century) maya codices are folding books written by
the pre-columbian maya civilization in maya heiroglypic script on Mesoamerican bark
paper.
 Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely
throughout East Asia and originated in China.
 Dibao in China (2nd century) The Chinese “dibao” is the earliest and oldest newspaper
in the world.

INDUSTRIAL AGE (1700S TO 1930S)

People used the power of stream, developed machine tools, established iron production,
and the manufacturing of various products (including books through the printing press)

Examples form of media:

 Telegraph is used for long-distance communication by transmitting electrical signals
over a wire laid between stations.
 Printing press is typically used for texts. It is a device that applies pressure to an inked
surface resting upon a print medium (like paper or cloth).
 Motion picture (also known as film or movie) is series of still photos on film, projected
in rapid succession onto a screen by means of light.

Other examples:
 Newspaper – the London gazette (1640)
 Typewriter (1800)
 Telephone (1876)
 Motion picture photography/ projection (1890)
 Commercial motion pictures (1913)
 Motion picture with sound (1926)
 Punch cards

ELECTRONIC AGE (1930S TO 1980S)

 Invention of transistor
 Transistor Radio, Electronic Circuits and the early computers.
 In this age, long distance communication became more efficient

NEW/INFORMATION AGE (1900S TO 2000S)

The internet paved the way for faster communication and the creation of the social
network. People advanced the use of microelectronics with the invention of personal computers,
mobile devices, and wearable technology. Moreover, voice, image, sound and data are
digitalized. We are now living in the information age.

FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION MEDIA

1. MONITORING FUNCTION
2.INFORMATION FUNCTION
3.OPINION FUNCTION
4.WATCHDOG ROLE OF JOURNALISM
5.CHANNEL FOR ADVOCACY OF POLITICAL VIEWPOINTS
SOURCES OF INFORMATION:

•INDIGENOUS MEDIA
•LIBRARY
•INTERNET

INDIGENOUS MEDIA - variety of media expression conceptualized, produced, and

circulated by indigenous people with information appropriate to their culture.

LIBRARY - library is a place where artistic, literary, musical and reference materials such
manuscripts, books, and films are kept for use and not for sale.
INTERNET - it is a global computer network providing a variety of information and
communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized
communication protocols.

INTERNET OF THINGS
Internet of things is the interconnection via the internet (can be wired or wireless) of
computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.
Example: A Smart Home. Window and door contacts, glass break and motion detectors, and
heat, smoke, and water detectors combined with security alarm pads, cameras, and smart
doorbells help secure your home against break-ins, fire, and floods.
The Benefits of Internet of Things (Iot)
Improving efficiency and safety, monitoring remote and hard-to-access equipment,
automating processes, reducing the environmental impact of operations, ensuring equipment
and goods maintain regulatory compliance, and saving money.
The Evolution The evolution of IoT as it stands today began just a few decades ago with the
development of ARPANET, the first connected network and the granddad of today’s ‘Internet’.
The Evolution of Internet of Things
1982 – A student in Carnegie Mellon University wants to know if the soda vending machine is
cold without going all the way there to check it. So, with the help of two fellow students and a
research engineer, he develops a code that can let anyone on the university ARPANET monitor
the status of the vending machine; whether it has soda bottles and whether they are cold or not.
1990 – John Romkey invents a toaster that can be turned on or off via the Internet.
1999 - The Trojan Room Coffee Pot is the world's first webcam prototype that was installed at
the University of Cambridge to monitor the amount of coffee remaining in the brewing
machine. Located in the "Trojan Room" within the university's old computer laboratory.
2000 - LG announced the first smart refrigerator.
2009 - Google started testing driverless cars.
2008 – The first IoT conference is held in Zurich, bringing together researchers and
practitioners from academia and industry to take part in the sharing of knowledge. (To improve
what they have started) In the same year, the US National Intelligence Council recognized IoT
as one of the six disruptive civil technologies. The Evolution of IoT gained popularity from this
point onwards.
