I-V CHARACTERISTICS

The I-V characteristics of an electrical component refer to the relationship between the
current flowing through and the potential difference across the component.

1. Write down the equation for resistance in terms of current and potential difference
(voltage).

R=V/I

2. Define what an ohmic conductor is.

Ohmic conductor is a material that follows Ohm's Law, its resistance stays constant and does not change with variations in voltage or current.

3. The graph shows the I-V characteristics of

two fixed resistors, A and B.

a. Write down if A is an ohmic conductor

Resistance stays constant

b. Explain which of the two resistors has a

greater resistance and why
delta i/ delta v
1/R
The resistor with the sleeper slope has greater resistance.

4. A filament bulb is not an ohmic conductor. This means its resistance is not constant
and hence its I-V graph is not a straight line.

a. Sketch the I-V graph for a filament bulb on a)

the axes on the right

b. Describe in detail how a filament bulb b) A filament bulb produces light through a process called luminescence. When
produces light current flows through a filament or bulb, it encounters resistance in the filament.
This resistance causes the filament to heat to very high temperatures, often in
excess of 2,000 degrees Celsius.

c. Explain in detail why a filament bulb is not

an ohmic conductor c)A filament bulb is not an ohmic conductor because its resistance changes with temperature. when current flows.
5. A diode is unlike other electrical
components for one main reason.

a. Write down what property makes a

diode special

Its ability to allow the flow of electrical current in one direction while blocking it in the other direction.

b. Sketch the I-V characteristic graph

for a diode on the axes on the right

c. Write down what LED stands for

Light Emitting Diode

6. Below is a graph showing the relationship between the current through a resistor and
the potential resistance across it. Calculate the resistance of the resistor.

R=V/I

7. Below is a graph showing the relationship between the current through a different
component and the potential resistance across it. Calculate the resistance of the
bulb when the potential difference across it is -4.0 V.

-4/-16 = 0.25
