Definition of Psychology:
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior,
and mental process.

The Three Key Ideas:

• Behavior
• Mental Process
Scientific
Scientific refers to the fact that the study of
psychology is based on information collected
through a set of systematic procedures
known as the scientific method.

Behavior
Behavior is any activity that can be observed,
recorded and measured.
Mental Process
Mental processes include thoughts,
memories, emotions, motivations, dreams,
perception and beliefs.

• Psychology’s Family Tree

Behavioral neuroscience

Experimental Psychology: Studies the process
of sensing, perceiving, learning, and thinking
about the word.

Cognitive Psychology: Focuses on higher


mental process, including thinking, memory,
reasoning, problem solving, judging, decision
making, and language.
What are the sources of change and stability in
behavior across the life span?

Developmental Psychology: Stages of life,


developmental tasks and change.

Personality Psychology: Consistency in


people’s behavior over time and the traits
that differentiate one person from another.
How do psychological factors affect physical and
mental health?

Health Psychology: Explores the relationship


between psychological factors and physical
disease.

Clinical Psychology: Deals with the study,


diagnosis, and treatment of psychological
disorder.
Counseling Psychology: Focuses on change and
adjustment. Prevent serious mental health
problems.

Social Psychology: Study the complex networks


of social relationships.

Cross-cultural Psychology: Investigates the


similarities and differences in psychological
functioning across various culture and ethnic
group.
