Step 5. Compute Nominal stiffness (EI) or column rigidity. At this stage, the area of reinforcement is
not known. Additional Calculations are needed.
Nominal stiffness can be calculated as follow.
EI = K c Ecd Ic + K s Es Is … . . ( EN 1992 − 1 − 1: 2013 ) Equation (5.21)

Step 8. Select the column reinforcement
We will use the tied-column interaction diagrams by assuming an equal distribution of longitudinal bars
in two opposite faces of the column. The parameters required for entering the interaction diagrams are.

Step3. Estimate the column size by assuming b/h=450/450, with cover to reinforcement 40mm.
Reinforcement consists of 32mm diameter bar and 8mm diameter tie.
The size of the column is taken as (450×450)mm.

As(provided) = 8042mm2 use 10 ∅ 32.
Thus, our given data on problem is, 6 ∅ 32mm, but our calculation is 10 ∅
32mm. So, increase beam size and reinforcement !!!!
Transverse reinforcements
The spacing of the stirrup is the minimum of the three values:
- 20 times the minimum diameter of the longitudinal bars= (20*32) =640mm
- the lesser dimension of the column = 400mm
- 400 mm
Hence, provide ϕ8 c/c 400mm.
